Washington Post reporter Bob Costa has spent the past several days in Wisconsin covering the Paul Ryan -v- Paul Nehlen primary campaign. According to an article published this morning, Costa is reporting that Ryan has ruled out attempting to pass the controversial Trans-Pacific Trade deal:
[ ] Turning to his congressional work, Ryan said he would not bring the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact to the House floor while President Obama is still in office.
No, no, Ryan said. We dont even have the votes for it . I dont see any way in which that could be done because youd have to change the TPP in some substantial ways, and I just dont see that happening. (link)
Unfortunately due to customary and negligent journalistic skills rampant within the U.S. legacy media apparatus, it is possible to see parseltongue and politispeak in this answer that provides room for House Speaker Ryan to back track if he gets the votes for it.
It is frustrating that journalists cannot simply ask direct questions and then hold politicians accountable to direct yes/no answers, instead choosing to engage with them on topics of their iTunes playlist genre. Perhaps Costa is unaware that millions of highly engaged political observers are tracking the TPP issue closely. I digress .
Is Speaker Ryans reversal on bringing TPP to a vote this year related to his reelection bid and primary challenge? Or, is Ryan just playing possum until after the risk of that primary bid is over?
These are critical issues at stake in the 2016 election, and the reason why political journalists must forcefully narrow the wiggle cone of responses. The U.S. consumer market is the biggest single economy for manufactured goods the the world; Donald Trump has proposed to leverage that aspect to renegotiate poor trade deals that undermine the U.S. worker.
However, there are also several media reports today candidate Donald Trump may endorse Paul Ryan tonight during a rally in Wisconsin with running mate Governor Mike Pence.
Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Preibus, and Speaker Ryan are all very good friends, life-long friends; and theres no doubt the structural leadership in the RNC/GOPe want to see Trump and Ryan closer together on issues. Support from Donald Trump would be big lumps taken out.
Ryan won’t support the TPP unless he loses his primary.
He’s lying.
Has Ryan said this in public?
If not, I don’t believe a word of it.
Exactly.
who?
Did he make a deal for Trump’s endorsement?
Or, is Ryan just playing possum until after the risk of that primary bid is over?
COunt on it, He has SOLD OUT the American People every chance he could, and he isn’t about to change now.
If this is true, Mr. Trump has already accomplished more in his political career than I could have expected from anyone else running.
He (Ryan) is lying again.
Looks like he did. ..and he better not back out
Notice how Ryan's tongue betrays his position on TPP? He's obviously on Obama's side, and wants this destructive abomination passed.
I'd rather not get the zot, or a visit from some alphabet agency, so I'll just censor the balance of my comments.
Ryan. It’s just like when McCain was in a primary and kept saying “Build the damn fence.” Never got built.
If Ryan loses the primary or the general election, he will certainly bring TPP to a vote. If he wins, he will probably bring TPP to a vote. This is not a good or honest man.
Trump effect. I bet Trump leveraged him.
Ryan wull backpeddle once he wins the primary lol
This is his pre-election stand, will shift dramatically if he stays Speaker.
Ryan shouldn’t strain himself in trying to explain ANYTHIng- he’s on his way out
Problem is I no longer trust Mr. Ryan.
Seems he is a globalist who is an open border supporter.
He’s also supported every damned penny this obammy character has asked for.
Hell with him.
