The Food and Drug Administration has recommended screening the entire US blood supply for the Zika virus, it announced today, noting that screening donated blood is already underway in Florida and Puerto Rico.
The new recommendation applies "across the board to anyone collecting blood," explained Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. This includes very large blood collection establishments, such as the American Red Cross, and some very small establishments, such as academic centers, he said.
The Red Cross said it will phase in universal testing. Currently, it is conducting Zika tests in five southeastern states and will expand testing to four additional states in the south central and southwestern US over the next two weeks, the organization said in a statement. The Red Cross did not offer details about which states are covered.

FDA discriminating against Zika!
Right....let the homosexuals infest the blood system with AIDS so as not to discriminate, but be sure to test for Zika. Makes lots of sense. Must be a Democrat lurking in the fog.
I just love it when posters use the correct plural of a word.
I stopped giving blood to the Red Cross before HIV hit in 1978. I just do not like those people, and they owe me about two gallons of blood. I have given my blood as needed at hospitals, though. Off topic. Sorry.
Somewhere between June and August Bloodworks NW of Seattle lowered their standards for who can give blood. I decided not to give anymore.
And follow the money for who stands to make billions from needing this test on every blood product!
If a family member needs blood for a surgery, I will give, although now you can give a pint of your own blood before surgery. We are all O positive, so that is cool.
One time my first judge needed some blood. He knew I drank Scotch. He asked me to have an extra drink the night before I gave blood for him. LOL!
Don't worry. Some idiot (ie, liberal) judge will decide that this test would discriminate against people with Zika by making them feel rejected. It also takes away their right to pass Zika on to some random individual.
The gaybot community is demanding that blood not be screened for HIV & AIDS. So why bother with zika?
