The news out of Brazil today might have been unimaginable 10 years ago, back when he thrilled crowds across Brazil with his promise of a different kind of future. It might have been unimaginable 5 years ago. It might even have been unimaginable 5 months ago. But this is 2016 Brazil, and these days the tables of power can turn quickly.
So it goes for Brazil’s former president Luiz Inacio da Silva, known as Lula, the man who was once the popular and charismatic leader of a new political movement in Brazil, founded on the premise of raising the country’s poorest out of poverty. Today, in a stunning reversal of fortunes, that same man received word that he will be made to stand trial for crimes of corruption.
Lula’s prosecution is a pivotal target for the prosecutors leading the Lava Jato, or Car Wash, corruption probe into money laundering tied to the Brazil state-owned oil company Petrobras . In fact, prosecutors made clear last week, in a powerpoint slide that drew a wave of social media mockery, that Lula is the central man in their cross-hairs. They have accused him of personally gaining a million dollars and a condo on the São Paulo coast via kickback schemes, and they argue that he is the central nexus of the country’s corruption.
