Ag Secretary to America: Stop Wasting Food, Cut Back Portions

WASHINGTON -- Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said America needs to stop wasting food, even if that means teaching people to cut back on the amount of food on their plates.

Speaking at the National Press Club on Monday, the former Iowa governor said long-term food insecurity "is a challenge, because we're going to have to increase food production -- I've seen anywhere from 50 to 70 percent in the next 35 years -- to meet a growing world population."

"But the first step, and the one way the USDA can provide help and assistance to meet this need, is to expand on the -- on the issue of food waste," Vilsack said. "A third of the food that we grow, raise and produce in this country is never consumed the way it was intended. It's wasted."

I like to get the 6 count kid’s meal grilled nuggets at CFA when doing fast food. I get a fruit cup on the side. Sometimes I don’t want super huge.

Eat your broccoli; the children of the future are starving. If no one eats the food no one will grow the food.

It's extremely difficult, Sam. I'm not a bad cook either, but with the way things are currently, I don't even have the time, let alone the wastage issue, which has always bothered me to no end...

Routine food aid is often a long-term bad idea because cheap/free food ruins local farmers and normal wholesale/retail food marketing. Food aid works well for short-term disaster relief, but poorly as an overall development strategy because it destroys local agricultural economies. Haiti is an example of a nation ruined by "aid": so many Haitian people have been reduced to a degrading state of permanent dependency.

Your approach, though -- coercing the hungry by making their survival contingent upon reproductive self-mutilation --- shows sheer contempt for poor people as people.

All of us have hungry people in our ancestral line, because all human societies have gone through famines, and all families --- viewed inter-generationally --- have gone through had times. People often survived by getting help. It goes all the way back to Genesis, if you are familiar with that.

If your scheme had been accepted, you would not exist.

None of us would.

I simply cannot cook for 1 or 2. There will ALWAYS be leftovers. It's the way I was raised and the way Mom taught me. I have tried and I tell ya...it is NOT easy.

We're in the same boat. So I freeze stuff in single-portion small plastic containers.

The ONLY food that’s being wasted are the CRUMMY SCHOOL LUNCHES that the MOOCH makes them eat.

What I am about to type is very uncharitable, but I do not care. If that food is on your plate, and you have paid for it, it is yours to do with as you see fit. Want to toss it in the garbage? Want to feed it to the dogs? Want to put it in the fridge and grow your kid’s next science experiment? Knock yourself out. It’s yours. Who cares what the rest of the world thinks. Yes, that is wasteful, but it’s not my call. Not anyone’s business either.

Same here, but I’m also king of the leftovers. My lunch is whatever is leftover from the night before.
It did take my wife and I a little while to figure out how to cook for 2 rather than 6 after the kids left on their own.

The historical method of dealing with hunger has been for the hungry people to go and try to conquer the lands and food supplies of others, or die trying. Either way (conquer or die), the population gets reduced enough to come into line with the food supply.

I'd rather avoid that, thank you very much. I'd also rather avoid having to kill people who come to try to steal my stuff -- but I will, if necessary.

Long term, those are the choices, however distasteful you may regard them.

My bk’fast is leftovers from the night before - except maybe tonight’s meal, chile con carne. I’m not a bk-fast person but I dive into the fridge 10-11am for a sandwich made from last night’s leftovers. Coffee is at 6am.

These progressives do not think through any of their actions. Your post was exactly what I was thinking.

Been there, do that. I swear, I start out planning on making just enough for the three of us. I wind up with two days worth of leftovers, and I still have to toss stuff after all is said and done.

Ask for smaller portions. Restaurants are most obliging unless you are eating at chains which follow a set menu that cannot be changed for purchasing reasons (I’m not a culinary student for nothing!). And if that doesn’t work, DOGGY BAG IT! Are you so tired and weak you can’t drag home a too large potato and perfectly grilled portion of steak?

Be a man; act like a man!

We might be descended primarily from people who were the grateful recipients of food aid. It is more likely that we are descended from fathers who decided they would rather kill than watch their kids starve.

And how did the Israelites get the farmland they needed after coming out of Egypt? Deuteronomy 20:

10 When you march up to attack a city, first make them an offer of peace.

11 If they accept your offer and open their gates to you, all the people of that city will become your slaves and work for you.

12 But if they do not make peace with you and fight you in battle, you should surround that city.

13 The Lord your God will give it to you. Then kill all the men with your swords,

14 and you may take everything else in the city for yourselves. Take the women, children, and animals, and you may use these things the Lord your God gives you from your enemies.

15 Do this to all the cities that are far away, that do not belong to the nations nearby.

16 But leave nothing alive in the cities of the land the Lord your God is giving you.
