The two major-party candidates running for Maryland's open U.S. Senate seat sparred Friday over their legislative records as well as Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump as they took part in the first debate in the race to succeed retiring Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski.

Szeliga, a Baltimore County lawmaker and the minority whip in the Maryland House of Delegates, said she lived on the minimum wage as a "maid, a waitress, a dishwasher" before starting a contracting firm with her husband. Szeliga, who opposes raising the $7.25-an-hour minimum wage, said low-wage earners are more interested in a career than a bump in salary.
Szeliga went on the attack in her opening statement, pointing to Van Hollen's 14 years in Congress, casting him as an insider and suggesting he has done little to address a wide range of problems, including the national debt, backlogs at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and even traffic in the Washington suburbs.

Voters, she said, "are tired of lip service coming from Washington."
One of the fiercest exchanges came during a discussion of Trump. Van Hollen noted that Szeliga supports the GOP nominee even though Maryland's Republican governor, Larry Hogan, does not.

Szeliga criticized Van Hollen for voting against a bill approved by the House last month that would make it easier to fire employees at Veterans Affairs.

Van Hollen is likely to win. Maryland GOP should have ran Andy Harris.
Van Hollen would win against either one. Maryland is a lost cause. And Governor Hogan has been a real disappointment with his non endorsement of Trump.
Looks like Andy didn’t want to run in the primary:
“Szeliga, the minority whip in the House of Delegates and the highest-ranking Republican woman in Maryland, captured early support from the state’s Republican apparatus, including Rep. Andy Harris of Baltimore County, for whom she once worked.” Baltimore Sun article dated April 27, 2016, after the primary was over
Andy probably doesn’t feel like he would bring much to the Senate. He’s a good doctor.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
I just hope Szeliga will win...I’d love to see 2 Senate seat in the Northeast flip Szeliga and Carter should win...
Welcome to FR. Love your tagline.
Thanks, my DEPLORABLE self been on FR for many years. The tagline is that wife and I are Trump supporters, my 13 year old (ConservaTeen) is a regular on here and we homeschool our DEPLORABLE (but wonderful) children..
Love it!
Hogan was a huge disappointment with his refusal to overturn the new draconian gun grabbing laws enacted a couple of years ago.
