Faculty at 14 Pennsylvania state universities went on strike Wednesday morning, affecting more than 100,000 students, after contract negotiations between the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and the faculty union hit an impasse.

The Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties announced on its website that its members went on strike at 5 a.m. because no agreement could be reached. The union represents more than 5,000 faculty and coaches across the state, and a walkout was expected to halt classes midsemester. […]

This is the first strike in the system’s 34-year history.

The union includes faculty from Bloomsburg, California, Cheyney, Clarion, East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, Indiana, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Millersville, Shippensburg, Slippery Rock and West Chester universities of Pennsylvania. State-related schools, Penn State, Pitt, Temple and Lincoln, are not affected. …

This is ridiculous. The Wagner Act, later modified by the Taft-Hartley Act was never envisioned to provide collective bargaining protection to faculty at a college and/or university level.

These unions are out of control.

Help improve higher education. Don’t contribute any money to it.

I really doubt that the faculty will get a lot of sympathy from the average PA resident (who makes about half what they do).

And all these kids and young adults, caught up in crushing student loans for $100,000 degrees, do not see that the ridiculously over-paid faculty is the problem?

And now they want MORE?

I was university faculty for many years. I know the pay rates. I was on the bottom (instructor), but many make very big bucks and have hardly any workload. Most never had a real job, moving from student to grad student to PhD candidate to professor.

Here's the BIG question:

Will their football teams play this weekend? And, will any football game patrons even notice?

Like "ClearCase_guy" noted up thread: And all across Pennsylvania, IQs began to rise ...

WHEW

Pennsylvania is sure havinjg an educational shake-up !

ITT Tech has shut its doors, the house is about to vote on a greatly expanded Charter School bill (which looks like it will easily pass) and now THIS.

If anyone doubts the criminality and corruption in the USA and the affect Donald Trump's emergence as the next POTUS has had BEFORE EVEN BEING ELECTED, shows how fragile the evil is in the face of righteousness.

VOTE TRUMP !

I graduated from one of those universities. Went back as an older student. By then, my eyes were opened and I didn’t have a head full of mush like the younger ones. Many of those profs aren’t worth what they are getting paid.

I attend Church with a lot of Kutztown profs. It’s going to be really hard to hold my tongue at choir practice.
