Australia agrees to first national gun amnesty in 20 years

Australia will allow gun owners to hand in illegal firearms without penalty next year as concerns grow over gun crimes involving such weapons, a federal minister said Friday.

Australia's police and justice ministers agreed at a meeting to start a nationwide gun amnesty from the middle of 2017, Justice Minister Michael Keenan said.

"Australia is world-renowned for the strength of our firearm laws, but illegal firearms do remain a deadly weapon of choice for organized criminals," Keenan told reporters.

It will be the first Australia-wide amnesty since a gun buy-back program in 1996 that followed a lone gunman killing 35 people in Tasmania state, Sydney University gun policy analyst Philip Alpers said.

That tragedy galvanized the government to legislate tough restrictions on rapid-fire weapons and to buy back almost 700,000 newly outlawed guns.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics shows the nation has since imported almost 1.2 million legal guns, although none of them are military-style semi-automatic assault rifles that are now banned from public ownership.

Surely the bad guys are lining up to turn in their illegal firearms so they won't be classified as crimina......... Oh. And about the "buy-back". Uh, how can you buy back something that was never yours in the first place. Oh, cause it "sounds" good. I musta forgot. Sounds like a plan helldabama would love to implement.

I am sure the organized criminals and general thugs will rush to turn their guns under this amnesty.

Are the Aussie officials that stupid??????

Many of OUR politicians are, as they say essentially the same thing. Even Clinton was using that line at the last debate — new laws to keep the guns out of the hands of criminals.

Illegal gun is a term that only applies to private ownership. If the government says you do do not have the freedom to own a particular gun, it is an illegal gun. If the government owns that same gun, suddenly it isn’t an illegal gun anymore... Just a gun.

“Australia will allow gun owners to hand in illegal firearms without penalty next year”

So this year, handing in illegal firearms carries a penalty? Hell, keep those guns.

Which precisely why this is basically pissing in the wind to feel better about themselves.

They can try the same thing here, but we would ignore it.
Americans would refuse `forgiveness’ from DC Overlords.

2nd amendment—A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

ex post facto law: a law that makes illegal an act that was legal when committed, increases the penalties for an infraction after it has been committed, or changes the rules of evidence to make conviction easier. The Constitution prohibits the making of ex post facto law.

...Queensland has had two gun amnesties since 1996. It seems that thousands of guns have been smuggled in from overseas or have been stolen from legal owners in burglaries and armed robberys and gun assaults have been on the increase.
They come in every way possible on boats and airplanes.

Oz should do as Sweden does for their own good, by NOT doing such a manner may very well allow fiction to become reality.

Australia becomes the land portrayed in the Mad Max films.

Australia only stole a small fraction of guns. I forget if it was only 2% or 20% of guns. Australians are still well armed. The Govt just lies about it.

I'm sure the replies before this already say...STUPID IDEA THAT NEVER WORKS. Aussies, don't give up your weapons unless they're inoperable that can put some money in your pocket while you hold onto your viable guns.

You Aussies were once an impressive Ally in the fight in WWII. Please don't metro out.
