RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - The Regional Transportation Commission reported it has been defrauded of $1.4 million and is working with law enforcement and its financial institution to get the money back.

A statement released by the RTC said it discovered the incident on Oct. 27. It didn’t say when it happened.

“The incident involved an email purportedly sent from one of the RTC’s vendors requesting an electronic funds transfer,” the RTC statement said. “RTC honored the supposed vendor’s request and processed the electronic payment in the amount of $1.4 million. The fraudulent transfer was limited to a single payment for one vendor.”

The RTC said it is working with law enforcement to investigate the incident.

It says the fraud did not “impact RTC’s systems, and these systems remain secure.”

It used to be a common scam to send out thousands of invoices to various random businesses. A surprising number of them were paid.

Well, it was only one payment. Nice to know, though, that their systems are secure.

Are you freakin kidding me? Secure systems don’t allow a $1.4 million dollar ripoff to occur. Perhaps they had inside help.

I matter how legitimate he may seem, that Nigerian guy who emailed you is NOT going to send you the money...
