Odd that anyone would care. I knew it correctly beforehand, but looked up the derivation of the phrase after posting.

Apparently a shortening of abated (lowered), earliest noted use by Shakespeare.

Somewhat weird that FR has lately been a hotbed of English Majors action (especially as Garrison Keillor has retired in the last few weeks).

This election has apparently disturbed The Force.....

There was a post last week or the week before using the correct word. It was commented on then too.

Some Freepers still can use proper grammar. although their number does seem to be decreasing over the years.
