Governor Punk attempted to automatically pardon 200,000 by executive order, but was thankfully stopped by the state courts who said each individual felon’s circumstances must be weighed. Nevertheless, just like a good Clintonista, he skirted that little detail and used a mechanical autopen to rapidly sign thousands of letters, as if he had personally reviewed them, even as his office was saying the total was 13,000. His autopen burned out after 60,000, but he assumed that would be enough. It was enough for the state, but not for the country.

To conservatives insulting Kaine for quoting a communist: Langston Hughes poem “Mother to Son” is the first literature I read outside of school, and it opened a world I never knew could exist, a world in which a complete stranger could speak to my soul, could know, love, inspire, and protect me in a way no one else, not even my family, could. He gave my heart a safe place. I didn’t know or care about his politics when I was 14, but I knew he understood something I couldn’t put into words. He opened the door to my life as a reader, a teacher (homeschooled both kids and got certified), a logical and dyed in the wool conservative. There is so much more to each of us than our politics
