Jawboning works, and that’s what Trump is talking about under the guise of making his phone call to the company presidents. There are no (zip zero nada) barriers to taking jobs out of the country now other than the company’s own economics. The threat of tarriff or taxes will start to constrain those decisions, although in the case of GM, these cutbacks could well be in part a result of previous government meddling by Obama.
Does anything say that a tariff has to be permanent? That it can’t be tied to agreements with US workers to accept somewhat lower pay in order to get a concession from the company to put them back to work? Don’t know for sure, just thinking about it...
yeah, well...what we’re doing now isn’t really working either.
Still, for pure negotiation reasons it’s foolish to take it off of the table.
