Please help me understand this as I live in PRNJ...if I take the Utah class and get a Utah carry license, wouldn’t national reciprocity compel NJ to recognize it?
I would like to see national reciprocity, but I do not believe Congress has the authority (except over DC) to pass it is a form we would find acceptable.
My home permit is NH. My surrounding states of ME and VT allow CCW to non-residents with no permit (Quick national CCW Advanced Placement quiz: What do VT, NH, and ME have in common?”)
I have a MA nonresident Class A high capacity CCW, which is not easy to get. I have VA and FL nonresident permits, so all in all I have about 38 states.
My problem is the blue wall of CT, NY NYC, NJ, and MD which block travel over I-95. It’s my view that liberating those states from tyranny is up to their residents, and that a bill to grant their own residents CCW would allow Congress a broad Federal police power I don’t want Congress to have.
I do want Congress to strengthen FOPA, though. Right now, NYC and NYS (which are separate jurisdictions with regard to firearms) do not recognize FOPA in the sense that you will be arrested and jailed, but you are allowed once you go to trial to introduce FOPA in your defense. This is outrageous.
Congress can and should mandate DC reciprocity immediately.
