Nigerian Executed in Singapore for drug trafficking

Chijioke Obioha, a 38-year-old Nigerian, has been executed in Singapore after being found guilty of drug trafficking, the local media reported on Friday.

Mr. Obioha was hanged in Changi Prison early Friday morning alongside a Malaysian national who was convicted on separate drugs offenses, the Straits Times reported, quoting a statement from the country's anti-narcotics bureau.

Mr. Obioha was arrested in April 2007 after being found in possession of more than 2.6 kilograms of cannabis. The quantity surpassed the 500 grams threshold that triggers the automatic presumption of trafficking under Singaporean law.

He was found guilty in December 2008 and was sentenced to death by hanging. An appeal he filed was dismissed in 2010, the Strait Times said.

His execution came two days after he lost an appeal for clemency from the Singaporean government.

Amnesty International, which made serious efforts to overturn his death sentence, condemned the scheduled execution of Mr. Obioha.

"The death penalty is never the solution. It will not rid Singapore of drugs.

"By executing people for drug-related offences, which do not meet the threshold of most serious crimes, Singapore is violating international law," the rights group said on Wednesday.

Mr. Obioha is the latest Nigerian to be executed for drugs-related crimes in the south-east Asian country.

In 2007, Iwuchukwu Tochi was executed by Singapore in the same Changi Prison despite all appeals from the Nigerian government and threats of diplomatic backlash.

They warn you on final approach to the airport....last chance to go and flush whatever you’re holding.

Don’t do the crime if you can’t pay the time

(don’t do it!)

Well well well!

Sings don’t play. I think I’ve posted before that I’ve seen charges, trial and execution within 30 days while working there. Truly swift justice. Ours has turned into a mockery.

Drug traffickers are advised not to enter Singapore.

They have zero tolerance for controlled substances.

One of them learned that lesson the hard way.

I bet they have a huge drug problem, since capital punishment does not deter crime. /sarc

And if somehow someone slips a package in your suitcase and you don’t notice it?

I’m not all that keen on foreign travel anymore. Too many yahoos of too many different stripes.

There’s plenty to see in the 50 states of America.

So if you want to get high on the cheap just hang out at the local airport and breathe. Seriously though, that’s the way you have to handle drug dealers.

’ despite all appeals from the Nigerian government and threats of diplomatic backlash.’
Does this term “ diplomatic backlash”have any relationship to Van Jones “White lash”?
Isn’t the noose a racist and a hate message?

Singapore is a nice place to live. Clean, orderly, zero street crime, no politically-motivated pandering to minorities or specific classes. That’s merely a western marxist game we play in the USA.

You may ask - what about their Indian, Malay, Muslim minorities? They are protected by the same rule of law, and enjoy the exact same rights at the majority Chinese Singaporeans, no more and no less.

You are right about that... my wife & I have friends over there that love it. Great business community with no tolerance for drugs or other BS.

Now owning a vehicle is a different story. Very expensive to drive there.

When used to spend time in Asia I only took one set civilian clothes with me. I bought clothes and toiletries there.

I was in Malaysia last month. My daughter and I planned to return to the area and tour through Bangkok, KL and Singapore.
I knew they were really tough but not that they hanged you for drugs!

BTW, I've never used or carried any illegal drugs.

This is old news. I have already been contacted by Chijioke Obioha’s widow. She would like me to help her manage the drug money.

Singapore is actually pretty good at figuring out who the real bad guys are. Probably not as much of a risk as in, say, Turkey..
