The Environmental Protection Agency on Friday said it plans to require mining companies to show they have the financial wherewithal to clean up their pollution so taxpayers arent stuck footing the bill.
The proposal follows a 2016 agreement reached under court order for the government to enforce a long-ignored provision in the 1980 federal Superfund law.
The requirement would apply to hardrock mining, which includes mines for precious metals, copper, iron, lead and other ores. It would cover mines and processing facilities in 38 states, requiring their owners to set aside sufficient money to pay for future clean ups.
The EPA is considering similar requirements for chemical manufacturers, power generation companies and the petroleum refining and coal manufacturing industries.

“Ok, we’ll get back to you January 21st...”
Guess that does not include the EPA. Remember that mine in Colorado Dyke Gina?
Dust masks will be required to walk in the remnants of the EPA come February.
As long as the money in the clean up account is reasonable, and it is not confiscated, it’s a good idea.
But it was you EPA fools that created that largest toxic disaster in American History.....
The EPA’s disaster at Gold King made Love Canal and Toms River look like a spilled can of paint.....
The Trump Administration will slash and burn these kinds of regulatory abuses!
P.S. ~ Do we need the EPA? Do we need the ECA?
Go, Trump, GO! MAGA!
The EPA is about to get a butt kicking. I hope Trumps cuts them to the bone.
but do we need federal authorities doing this?
locals could do this through the permitting process
in order to get or renew a permit, a bond has to be floated for the clean up
No difference then a building having to float a bond for road improvements, utilities, etc when building a new development. The bond is there in case the builder goes belly up and the roads in the new development or drainage isn’t complete, that way the city can get it finished without having to get it from the tax payers
A mime is a terrible thing to waste.
The same might better have been done with Solyndra and similar scams of Obama Crony Capitalism ...
But I want to know who is going to take down all those big windmills when the money runs out.................
We need to protect the environment, but EPA’s primary mission has morphed into screwing people over. They have become anti-American.
We need to scrap it and start over. Fire all EPA workers and ban them from all future public employment.
Isn’t the EPA the clowns who gave us Gold King Mine disaster?
Have they cleaned it up yet?
It’s already required. Trump’s Rule: For every new reg, remove two others.
A mime is a terrible thing to waste.
During the ‘70’s there was an environmental group called “Earth First” and in Colo. their bumper stickers were all over. A Mining engineer friend of mine had a bumper sticker made :
“Earth First”.. We’ll Mine The Other Planets Later.
You can protect things without being anti husiness full fascist.
Look, the EPA is stuffed with unemployable people with useless degrees whose only mission is to severely restrict the reasonable economic activity of the human race...eliminate the agency and its 10’s of thousands of activists whose sole intent is to eliminate the human race so the earth can die in peace....what garbage, fire them all and lock the doors...their existence is not justified...I would put more faith in our generations of farmers and merchants than in a bunch of bureaucrats who have never earned an honest living other than government and academia!
