Personally, I believe one reason the Catholic Church has taken a neutral position on the evolution question as it relates to one's salvation is in recognition that evolutionary theory has become SO ubiquitous, and the training needed to make an informed choice has become SO specialized, that belief in evolution in modern times is only a venal sin as opposed to the full bore mortality outlined in Romans 1.
To be sure, there is no excuse, but I do believe God in his mercy allows for a measure of mitigation with so much arrayed against, and so little in defense of, a proper understanding of His creation.
To be sure...we all know people who, even though they subscribe to some form of evolutionary theory, STILL "glorify him as God," and "give thanks to Him," which they would not if " their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened" as it says in the Scriptures.
