Megyn Kelly: Trump and First Amendment 'not a beautiful match'

Megyn Kelly: Trump and First Amendment 'not a beautiful match' © Getty Fox News host Megyn Kelly criticized Donald Trump’s use of Twitter and warned of the potential "de-legitimization” of the media under the president-elect in a Wednesday interview with NPR’s "Fresh Air."

Kelly, who was the target of many social media attacks during the campaign, said Trump might not be aware “that every tweet he unleashes against you ... creates such a crescendo of anger and, in my case again, threatening behavior.” The reporter cited "thousands of tweets" directed at her as an example — threats to "beat the hell out of me, to rape me, honestly the ugliest things you can imagine."

On Monday night at an event in Washington, the journalist blamed members of Trump's team for encouraging some of the hate online.

But the host of “The Kelly File” said she was determined not to let Trump’s behavior and the resulting threats impact her coverage.

“We were not going to change our coverage of him just because my life was being threatened,” she said in Wednesday's interview. “It was a challenge because I didn’t want to hit him too hard as retribution for what was happening and I didn’t want to go too soft on him out of fear.”

Kelly said that if Trump continues to tweet as president, he needs "to be aware of the power he has when he releases these tweets.”

She also called Trump’s relationship with the First Amendment “not a beautiful match” and said she’s worried for the press under a president Trump.

“The people, as much as it’s fun to hate us, they do need us. They need good, strong, skeptical journalists to be covering whoever it is — whether it’s Barack Obama or President Donald Trump,”

Megyn Kelly: Trump and First Amendment 'not a beautiful match’
Pseudo Objective Journalism and First Amendment 'not a beautiful match’

The natural disposition is always to believe. It is acquired wisdom and experience only that teach incredulity, and they very seldom teach it enough. The wisest and most cautious of us all frequently gives credit to stories which he himself is afterwards both ashamed and astonished that he could possibly think of believing.
IOW, everyone is a born sucker, and each of us has to struggle continuously against our natural gullibility.
The man whom we believe is necessarily, in the things concerning which we believe him, our leader and director, and we look up to him with a certain degree of esteem and respect. But as from admiring other people we come to wish to be admired ourselves; so from being led and directed by other people we learn to wish to become ourselves leaders and directors . . .

The desire of being believed, the desire of persuading, of leading and directing other people, seems to be one of the strongest of all our natural desires. - Adam Smith, Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759)

Everyone is selling something. Especially people who go out of their way to insist on their own disinterestedness.

The true mission of FR is to enable us to pool our (individually quite inadequate) skepticism. Who among us has not had the experience of reading, either an article or a reply, and being taken in completely - until another reply utterly deflates what you had thought was a valid, even an excellent, argument?

It is a commonplace that journalists state or insinuate that they are objective. Memory of living man runneth not to the contrary. That should have been the tipoff to me fifty years ago. For I know that I can never be sure I am being objective - still less should I believe someone who claims to know who is objective.

You can’t have free speech and then claim hate speech when people says things you don’t wish to hear.

MeAgain Kelly is so inept and devoid of talent that she cannot write about anything but herself. Wasn’t she a lawyer or so she likes to say? Cover or Law or SOMETHING other than the brainless twit we have come to know and loathe.

I’m sorry, but threatening her makes us no better than Democrat supporters. We should simply say we disagree with her analysis and let her know we no longer value her opinions. If she wants to act like a real journalist and provide news then that is one thing. When she wants to offer her opinions and present them as a factual news story, then she deserves to be told she is not a real reporter and is only offering up her opinion that we reject.

Shut up Megan... you’re looking stupd now.

You hitched your rising star on HilLIARy... you would have been her main media squeeze if she had won, and she (and you) blew it by just being WRONG and not doing your actual job, which is REPORTING the news, not trying to steer it.

First ammendment applies to Trump too, Megyn. You say what you want, he calls you biased and wrong. Both are perfectly compatible with the first amendment.

What evidence do you have that anyone anywhere actually threatened her, as opposed to her established history of making things up whole hog, submitting things out of context, and blind opportunism?

Have you ever considered that before you deride people for doing something, it might be a good thing to make sure the something actually happened?

Since it’s Megyn, this has to be said.
