Perry Said to Be Trump’s Top Candidate for Energy Secretary
Chicago Tribune ^

Donald Trump has narrowed his search for energy secretary to four people, with former Texas Gov. Rick Perry the leading candidate.

People familiar with the president-elect's selection process said two Democratic senators from energy-producing states -- Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Manchin of West Virginia -- are also in the mix, along with Ray Washburne, a Dallas investor and former chairman of the Republican National Committee.

If Trump picks any of the four he will break with recent tradition of putting scientists at the top of the Energy Department. Among other things, the agency is responsible for policies on the safe handling of nuclear material.

Trump met with Perry and Washburne while attending the Army-Navy football game in Baltimore on Saturday. It was at least the second time he'd spoken to the two men for potential roles in the new administration. Trump met with Heitkamp at Trump Tower in New York on Dec. 2, and is scheduled to meet with Manchin in New York.

The Perrydactyls like CWs wife will be happy. I suppose it isn’t the worst choice even though I have never been a fan of Perry.

Heidi Heitkamp or Joe Manchin would be a sly choice on the part of The Donald. It would remove at least one vote the Democrats could possibly use for various obstructions in the Senate, and the replacement for either of them, to be nominated by Republican governors or legislatures, would almost certainly be a Republican rather than a Democrat, further shifting the balance in the Senate.

Trump is playing a long game of chess, while the Democrats are pursuing Tiddlywinks. And missing the cup just about every time.

I can see Perry as Secretary of Agriculture but not Secretary of Energy. Just because he is from Texas doesn’t mean that he knows anything about the oil & gas business.

Perry was Texas Agriculture Commissioner for almost 10 years before he was elected governor and he has a BS in Animal Science from Texas A&M.

//he has a BS in Animal Science from Texas A&M.//

But did he actually ever make any money from farming or ranching? Farmers tend to hate ‘college educated idiots’ who don’t actually farm.

Whoever it is must be committed to making America energy independent, building pipelines and making coal a viable energy source again.

Perry’s father was a cotton farmer. After college Perry went into the Air Force and then back to cotton farming with his father until he was elected Agriculture Commissioner (he was elected to the Texas legislature while he was still farming, but in Texas that is a part time position that pays about $5,000 per year).

I was not a big fan of Perry as Governor (though I voted for him every time against the Democrat), and I would not have voted for him in the Presidential Primary (if he had lasted long enough to make it to the ballot), but he has experience in agriculture.

If we have to put up with Perry’s globalism, then we should get a Texas sized tax cut.

Perry is helping to fund a Mexican owned oil pipeline being built across W TX from the Permian Basin oil patch to Mexico. This was a shady deal from the get-go, and the ranchers in that area are not happy with the project at all.

West Virginia has a Democrat governor.

Trump is playing a long game of chess, while the Democrats are pursuing Tiddlywinks. And missing the cup just about every time.

I'm pretty sure that the Democrats, Heitkamp and Machin in particular, are well aware of the fact that the only reason they're under consideration is that they are Democrat senators. And they also have to know that they have a better chance of re-election in 2018 than still being in the cabinet in 2018.
