Officials for President-elect Donald Trump said 16-year-old singer Jackie Evancho, a former “America’s Got Talent” contestant, will perform the national anthem at the January inauguration ceremony.

Boris Epshteyn, a Trump aide, wrote Wednesday on Twitter, “Honored to have @jackieevancho performing the national anthem at the @TrumpInaugural Ceremony.”

When Obama was sworn in he asked Beyonce to sing “At last”

It was the signature song of Etta James.

It would be so nice if Etta James were invited. Unfortunately it’s too late.

As for range, some of us, myself included and several others I have met, have had three octaves plus since we dropped out of momma. ☺

a great choice (& a genuine supporter) for Donald J. Trump’s Inauguration - to perform “How Deep Is Your Love”!

(first published on 20 September as “Barry Gibb: ‘We once wrote three No 1 singles in an afternoon — I think we were pretty high’” - in The Times newspaper in England 30 September, 2016, written by Ed Potton, and republished in The Australian as)

Barry Gibb: dancing out of the shadows
by Ed Potton. The Times UK
These days he spends most of his time at his house in Miami — he has a US passport and is a fan of Donald Trump — but his famous toothy lisp is still full of Manchester, where he lived until he was 12...
His politics swing rightwards: “You’ve got to watch out for your family, protect your own territory. Go back to the Stone Age, you know!” He says he’ll probably vote for Trump in November. “I want to see a big character,” he says. “If it was some guy with spectacles and a side parting, that’s boring. During the war we had great characters that led us.” He met Trump at a charity event in the 90s and found him “very pleasant. Behind this big, rich guy is probably a really big heart.”...
The Donald’s support for the second amendment is also a factor, you suspect. Gibb likes his guns...

There is no such thing as a child opera singer. What she’s doing is mimicry that is taxing her vocal folds well beyond what a child’s vocal folds are meant to withstand. People who study singing opera usually don’t get to stuff like Verdi and Puccini until grad school.

As critical as I have been of Joan Baez’s politics, I have always loved her voice. She too, has easy command of many octaves. There, I said it! I recall a folk song she did called ‘Stewball’. It was about someone’s pet horse, sung live to acoustic guitar.

I was unaware on Jackie Evancho. I am an old man. I have never heard a greater God given voice in my life. She is a miracle on Earth from God. Go Trump. When Thunder Struck — IT STRUCK!!

Absolutely amazing voice, even as a very young girl. I recall when she sang on AGT, hardly anyone believed it was her voice. She HAD to be lip-syncing a full-grown female opera singer's voice. It MUST be a stunt that NBC was pulling. That was the buzz.

According to Wikipedia, "After Evancho's performance, commentators queried whether her performance had been lip-synched. On the next evening's live show, Evancho sang an impromptu voice exercise to demonstrate that the broadcast was of her live voice. In an interview, Mandel addressed the issue: "what people are ... really saying [is] that it's really too good to be true. You are so perfect and so wonderful that people have never heard a talent like this. ... You've got to take that as a compliment. ... Even if you don't love that kind of music, you can't deny that [it] is perfection."

I can't really think of a better compliment that you could give to someone, than for that person's talent to be beyond what you think is humanly possible.

This is the truth. My daughter is 17 and after 2 years of classical vocal training is singing art song repertoire. She had a sample lesson at a well known music conservatory and was told they start all freshmen ( 18 and 19 year olds) with beginning art songs. Opera is a very long haul career, and the heavy repertoire often doesn’t start until graduate school. Female Opera singers are beginning careers in their early thirties and often male voices aren’t fully developed until they are in their 40’s.

As a lieder fanatic, I concur in the importance of the art song repertory.

Wow! I absolutely love Jackie Evancho.

What a great choice. She has one of the most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard.

My wife and I saw her perform live with the Dallas Philharmonic in 2013. She was absolutely spellbinding.
