No, it was not brilliant. James Madison opposed the enumeration of rights (which are infinite) because the government would soon come to regard those enumerated as the limit of our rights.

The body of the Constitution did not grant congress to establish a religion. Where did you find congressional power to mandate a religion?

My opening statement

“I think we can thank the founders for having the foresight to NOT allow government to mandate a particular belief system”

The founders had the foresight to keep religion OUT of politics and it was brilliant. This was in fact not an enumeration of a right so much as it was a restriction on federal power to dictate to individuals which religious practices were permitted and which were prohibited.

By excluding government from the ability to establish or prohibit exercise of personal religious practice and belief they made certain that congress can not pass legislation stating that (insert religious belief here ie Hindu, Islam, Buddhism, Shinto, Sikhism etc.)is now the “official” religion of the US.

Brilliant move.

Religious liberty was one of the driving reasons many of the original colonists came over
