Sometimes someone inadvertently performs a public service by bringing an unbelievably stupid and dangerous idea to the surface, where it can be exposed for what it is.
The New York Times can be credited if that is the word with performing this public service in a recent editorial against proposals to allow law-abiding citizens to carry concealed guns. They refer to what they call the National Rifle Association's "fantasy that citizens can stand up to gunmen by shooting it out."
Nobody has suggested any such thing. Data collected over many years but almost never seeing the light of day in the New York Times or the rest of the mainstream media show many thousands of examples of people defending themselves with a gun each year, without having to pull the trigger.
If someone comes at you with a knife and you pull out a gun, chances are they will stop. The only time I ever pointed a gun at a human being, it was when someone was sneaking up toward me from behind a shed in the middle of the night. I never fired a shot. I just pointed the gun at him and told him to stop. He stopped.
Actually having to shoot someone is the exception, not the rule. Yet the New York Times conjures up a vision of something like the gunfight at the OK Corral.

Latte’ liberals like those at the NYT’s don’t understand self defense. They’re cowards that surrender at the first sign of any danger.
In a just world, Sowell would have been our first black president. I certainly would have voted for him. The man is a thinker and a patriot cast out of the mold of the Founding Fathers.
Thomas Sowell’s Common Sense stands out so much of the time. I love following his logic over the years. It is a breath of fresh air. Like Orwell stated, “In an age of deceit, truth is a revolutionary act.” (Well, something like that).
Sowell is a voice of Sanity in this upside-down mostly Marxist/socialist world where Slavery is Freedom, Vice is Virtue and Boys can be Girls.
We hear Public Service when what they are really saying is Public Serve Us.
We hear Public Service when what they are really saying is Public Serve Us.
Thomas Sowell as he is known and loved.
I am a concealed carry citizen for many years. I am also very adept with firearms, as are many many other Texans. I have absolutely no desire to be in a gunfight. You can get killed in a gunfight. I would never pull my weapon unless I or another innocent is in mortal danger.
However I assure you if I pull my weapon I will most certainly use it to try and kill. The second best weapon is the one you never have to use. The best weapon is the one that is used to stop bad people from killing you or other innocents. I hope I never need to use my weapons in mortal combat.
Amen...Very well said.
