presidents who clearly lost the popular vote

Because we are a Union of States, the overall popular vote is irrelevant in presidential elections. The popular vote PER STATE is the one identified in The Constitution.

Yes, it is 50 individual elections, one must win more of them than the other.

I like to use a baseball analogy, the team that scores the most runs overall in the World Series is not the winner. The one that wins the most games is.

Jaillary won California by something like over 4 million votes (probably half of which were cast by illegals) where Trump never even bothered to campaign. Take out California and Trump won the popular vote.

People living in isolated geographical areas are at much greater risk of having their needs ignored than people who are bunched up together in a populated city. The extra electoral power is needed to balance out that risk.
