Walker asks Trump to allow Wisconsin to drug test food stamp recipients
The Washington Examiner ^ | December 20, 2016 | Kelly Cohen

Walker has long supported drug testing food stamp recipients, a policy he and Republican lawmakers approved in 2015 that has since been blocked by a federal court. Federal law does not allow states to impose drug tests on recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, better known as food stamps.

"We have been forced to delay our implementation and are optimistic your administration will give states like Wisconsin the flexibility to provide the accountability the taxpayers demand," Walker said in his letter.

I can answer some of your questions.

Regarding the cost: the state pays for it until a person tests positive, after that the testing is paid for by the applicant. When someone is charged with drug use and probation requires testing the person has to pay for it themselves no matter what kind of financial hardship it causes-SNAP could follow same protocol. The state could probably recover the costs of drug testing through what is saved by the elimination of benefits to drug users. It’s about $40 per test vs hundreds per month on groceries.

As to kids starving without food stamps, there are already plenty of charities and government programs that feed kids away from home. Free breakfast and lunch at school, plus meals at the park and the charities that have the backpack program for kids in need to secretly bring home food for the weekend. If kids are starving with all of that due to their parents’ selfish drug use then they don’t deserve to keep their kids.

It never used to be easy to be slothful in our society; people who were struggling would put their kids, not their drug use, first. We should make it extremely painful for parents who neglect their children due to drug use.

I have no actual data to back this up, but IMO based on observation, if only citizens were allowed to receive benefits then a majority of those currently on the dole would no longer be eligible. Thus saving millions. It’s probably because I live in a rural area and see many non English speakers in front of me at the store using their SNAP cards. Inner cities are probably different, but it still seems that we have more people here illegally than we have citizens on SNAP benefits. Even illegals who work are usually on assistance-often with a second false ID. Refugees all get SNAP for at least the first seven years here.

It seems that the end result of this would be an increase in crime, as many drug addicts would likely turn to crime instead of gainful employment.

Well, then, simple solution. No food stamps.
If they can afford the drugs then they can afford food.

OK, but do you then take the children out of homes where the parents test positive? Do you place them in the foster care system?

If need be.

Great reply: This applies to all the abby normal life styles libs want us to pay for!

Transgender sex changes, abortions, birth control, drug use/so called rehab, any weird courses in College.

They can do their thing as long as it doesn’t endanger my family, friends or me. Also, they can pay for their life styles, not us/me!

I'm not about nanny stating anything.....but if your fat welfare ass has money for dope then you can buy your own damn food. I'd also test them for nicotine. You piss hot while on the dole without a doctor's script and pill count - you're eligibility for "benefits" is done. period. forever.

Don't like it? Tough shit, quit your dope, eat your dope, or starve - I don't really care.

If I gotta piss to work they should have to piss to not work.

Damned right, if those who PAY for the damned food stamps have to be drug tested so they can have the right to PAY for them, then those who are given the food should certainly have to be drug tested. Most of what is going on in this country now is just downside up and bass ackwards.

Libertarians have taken over?

A real libertarian would be in favor of kicking as many people off welfare as possible.

These are just people who would rather their druggie family members be dependent on tax payers. If it was not for that they might be forced to take care of them.

It seems that you are saying that legalized theft by congress (forced taxation to feed drug users or non-citizens) is preferable to illegal theft by the drug users/non citizens (which brings probation, jail time or deportation) to feed themselves.

Why? We have no recourse when congress decides to confiscate and distribute our earnings, but we do have legal recourse when individuals do. I also find it hard to believe that food stamps are the one thing standing between drug users and the additional crime of theft.

most working people can be subjected to drug tests.

the people living off workers ought to also be tested.

And food stamps should be denied individuals who test positive for cannabis.
