LM CEO just had a good conversation with @RealDonaldTrump… she personally committed to drive down the cost of the F-35!

Boeing is already producing the new wings - they didn’t bother retooling, just designed a new set. It was cheaper. http://www.boeing.com/defense/support/a-10-wing-replacement-program/index.page

Keep in mind that we don’t have any new, untouched Warthog parts to scan in any more - all the airframe parts save the new wings are well used and abused and therefore would not be quite true to original spec.

The original plans, specs and blueprints were also all destroyed with the tooling by order of Congress.

Agree
The only thing that worries me is he has the type of personality that works themselves to death. Hopefully the chef will work in some healthy foods per Melania and Ivanka’s requests. For sure he will be making fewer drive-through purchases with grandbabies in tow — both a blessing and a shame

Maybe the work crew can help too. Their already seems to be a closeness he found in youth at military school where he worked hard but all laughed harder More than one said if there was a prank on campus DT was the first called in These men have all remained friends- another trait of a good leader.

His behind the wheel days will be few if ever now and definitely no more with kids piled into backseat. The family is giving up so many small “normal” things. Flying coach among them it seems.

His leadership qualities will again shine but will he step back for the rounds of golf or other down time his body needs.

AMERICA has truly been blessed! May it’s people continue to follow the leadership of mike and Karen Pence and humble ourselves in prayer.
Merriest of Christmases to All and to All a productive and prosperous year!

Not armored like the A-10 which is why it didn’t go anywhere at the time. Makes sense as a UAV, though that’s still not as good as manned CAS until AI gets better.

The only thing that Burt did not address is the armored tub as in the A-10 although he did address the armored surge cell for the fuel delivery. Outside of that, if there were a replacement for the Warthog, a very good start.

That is true but scanned in, can easily be corrected or optimized without tooling and in many cases, can be manufactured with much tighter tolerances than in the early 70’s.

I would wager that it goes more to the government folks responsible for the contracts have been scamming us with the graft and “contributions” necessary to move a contract forward.

So far, the only thing Trump has been wrong about is that I would get tired of winning.

He has just started. It is pre season. ;-)

Give him time. Think about this ramping up a million % and keeping going for 8 years under him and then 8 years under Pence. It is possible. Think football. Think Patriots and Brady. ;-)

Let me see if I have this right. Men spend billions a year on prostitution in this country alone, and you're ridiculing women for not being able to control costs.

One little problem - since all you have is essentially bent (sometimes subtly) or worn parts, how can you determine what the original spec was?

As several DoD studies have pointed out even in recent years, the expense of reverse engineering the A-10 would likely be greater than just starting over. Which is honestly what we probably should do - not slavishly attempt to reverse engineer what went before but design a new one along the same lines. I wouldn’t be too surprised if there were some Boeing engineers who worked on the wings working up something for the fuselage and tail empennage now on their own time.

You would have to understand that once the surfaces are scanned in, there are commands that allow the smoothing to tangential intersections between all of the thousands and millions of polygons that make up a surface scan. We have scanned an entire racing car to include the wheels and tires to build solid models from. the scan was so accurate you could see even the thinnest irregularities such as decals and paint lines easily. We merged those surfaces tangent to the actual body next to it, applied the tangent joining and once the other features such as mating flanges, were able to cut new mold bucks, after correcting left to right symmetry, on a large 5 axis router to a cutting tolerance of .,005”.

As for original spec for the re-engineered piece of an A-10, that is contained in the grain structure and the metallurgy obtained in the destructive testing of an original throw-away piece.

Of the scanned piece optimized, that piece should also be subjected to CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), or wind tunnel in a computer, to further optimize its aero properties as a part of the optimization process.

If you go to this site, the model on the home page header is our initial design of a Cadillac CTS-V designed for road racing. The original car in its stock shape was over 52” high and a wheelbase of about 113”. This design was optimized to be 45” high and a wheelbase of 102”. Also, the widening of the fenders and nose to include the splitter as part of the carbon fiber body pieces was all designed

With target acquisition devices on the ground and JDAMS, dropped from high altitude, you have CAS.

That being said, A-10s are needed as well. The only variant that is needed is the Marine one to replace the Harrier.

I read where the VP of the F 35 program said that - since the technical baseline was frozen the program has not had a dollar increase or day slip in the schedule. In the early days of any defense acquisition there is great deal of pressure (from the customer as well as engineers discovering better was to do something) to make changes/improvements as the design progresses. It is during this phase of the program where there is no competition or push-back on prices that program cost grows. That’s why we use to use “cost plus” contracting for program development instead of “fixed price” bids. This let actual cost increase but profit was fixed - companies could not make additional profit on changes. This was really better, but the pressure is on now to make all contracting fixed price. It just does not work.

——since the technical baseline was frozen-—

I saw 5 generals and a swarm of officers exiting the meeting and passing Trump with nary a nod. All had stern looks, no smiles.

I suspect that in front of the Boeing and Lockheed Martin CEO’s, Trump read them some sentences from the riot act about getting their purchasing under control
