Denmark’s employment minister has demanded immediate action after it emerged that at least 36 Danish citizens received tens of thousands of pounds worth of unemployment benefits despite having left the country to fight with Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
The Danish security service PET reported 36 people fighting in Syria... in an attempt to stop benefits, the Ekstra Bladet tabloid reported, citing documents...under Denmark's freedom of information laws. Together the men have received well over (£77,000) since leaving to fight.
“It is totally unacceptable and a disgrace. It should be stopped,”.. Mr Lund Poulsen told the newspaper he would write a letter to local councils in the New Year demanding that they react more rapidly to reports from the authorities. ... 34 were receiving a benefit called ‘kontanthjaelp’ or ‘cash help’ from their local council, while the other two were receiving a private but heavily subsidised unemployment insurance.-snip-
Denmark is not the only country where welfare authorities have inadvertently paid for its citizens to fight for Isil. The Swedish jihadi Michael Skråmo claimed more than (£4,422) from Sweden’s social security agency while living and working for the terror group in its capital Raqqa — despite appearing in a string of widely reported propaganda videos. The Swedish terrorism researcher Magnus Ranstorp told Ekstra Bladet that European welfare payments had become one of the organisation's funding streams.
“We do not know the precise extent, but there is documentary evidence that Isil recruits from Europe are funding the group to a significant extent,” he said. “That might concern the abuse of social benefits, tax fraud and other income streams where the giver either consciously or unconsciously gives money that goes straight to the Islamic state.”
