President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday attacked General Motors in a tweet, claiming the auto giant is making a Chevy Cruze model in Mexico and then sending them to U.S. dealers tax free.

"General Motors is sending Mexican made model of Chevy Cruze to U.S. car dealers-tax free across border. Make in U.S.A.or pay big border tax!" Trump said on Twitter...

An Inconvenient Truth: It Was George W. Bush Who Bailed Out the Automakers

On December 19, 2008, a week after Republicans in the Senate had killed a bailout bill proposed by Democrats, saying it didn’t impose big enough wage cuts on the U.A.W., Bush unilaterally agreed to lend $17.4 billion of taxpayers’ money to General Motors and Chrysler, of which $13.4 billion was to be extended immediately. He had to twist the law to get the money. Deprived of congressional funding, he diverted cash from the loathed TARP program, which Congress had already passed, but which was supposed to be restricted to rescuing the banks. “I didn’t want there to twenty-one-per-cent unemployment,” he said to a meeting of the National Automobile Dealers Association in Las Vegas last month, explaining why he acted as he did. “I didn’t want history to look back and say, ‘Bush could have done something but chose not to do it.’ ”

“Trump usually has his facts straight.”

His tweet didn’t say anything that is incorrect. 4500 Cruze hatchbacks made in Mexico were sold in the US in 2016, according to GM. Presumably, it is those vehicles that he wants to tax.

THIS was the shortened headline put out by the media today:

“Trump Tweets That He Could Slap General”

Then I clicked on the link:

“Trump Tweets That He Could Slap General Motors with a Big Border Tax”

“Except he’s wrong about them all being made in the US.”

When/where did he say that?

No wonder it's a “small number” - From Yahoo -

The company builds the new Cruze hatchback for global markets in Mexico, and a “small number” of those hatchbacks are sold in America, GM said in a statement. The hatchback version of the Cruze went on sale in the fall.

They have only been for sale in the US for a few months...:^)

The business of America is business.

Business on a global scale is good for America

Living in a 1934 isolationist rut is bad for America

Trump didn’t say they were all made here, the poster I referenced did post exactly that upthread.

To be specific, Poison Pill said that Trump was wrong and that all Cruzes were made in the US at post 37.

There’s also the fact that the hatchback is unpopular as a design in the US market - the Cruze hatchback isn’t expected to sell well.

“The Chevy Cruze cars that are sold in the US are made in Lordstown OH. Trump goofed “

Maybe so, but most of their Suburbans, Tahoes, Avalanches, Silverados, etc., are being assembled in Monterrey, Mexico. These are some of their most profitable vehicles.

My apologies to you. I mistook the quote, below, from your post to refer to Trump, not to Poison Pill.

Except he’s wrong about them all being made in the US.

That isolationist and self sufficient America kicked butt on NAZI Germany, AXIS countries and Japan. All the while supplying the USSR and GB with arms and ammo. Seemed pretty good to me.

You Free Traitors™ are lucky Trump came along. It looked like the USA was devolving rapidly into chaos and the globalist Free Traitors™ were high up on "pitch fork and torch" crowds lynch 'em list. Trump may have saved your life.

OK, I guess it was on GWB. Maybe Obama just took credit for it.

Then lay out a plan to renegotiate NAFTA and take the shot with Congress and get it done. We all voted for Trump and knew the NAFTA rework was coming. Fine.

My issue is; the tweets were supposed to cut through the media half truth bullshit and talk straight with the voters. But with this tweet, we got something like 2% of a truth since that's the total volume of Cruze vehicles that come in.

Perhaps you are missing where Trump is going with this. GM is big in Mexico. They build their pickups and SUVs in Monterrey, Mexico. He’s simply made the opening gambit with them. And unlike Ford, they got tons of taxpayer money in their bailout. I like GM cars, but I think they have had some $hit senior management for years that needs to get their a$$ed scrubbed by Trump. I am looking forward to more “in-depth tweets” with his “incessant scrub brushing.” I guess time will tell.

They can’t do that and keep their plants open - there’s legal chicanery in it that says that anyone buying the assets of GM assumes the same contract.

And, of course, the union has seats on the existing GM’s board.

Obama went to Bush and begged for him to sign it so Obama would have a chance to ‘fix’ the companies when he got in office. While Bush signed it, it was at Obama’s behest.
