This needs to be accompanied by several measures that make it beneficial for companies to do business back here.

Get rid of unions, lower business taxes, etc.

If we use all sticks and no carrots we may as well be the democrats (see Atlas Shrugged).

Don’t think we can get rid of unions but we can certainly lower taxes and regulations. That said, you can’t require US production to have required massive labor, environmental and other regulatory costs and then allow MNCs to skirt every last law by building 20 miles south of the border and import tariff free, especially since our goods that get sent there (and Europe/other places) get a VAT tax added there.

Get rid of unions, lower business taxes, etc.

Yet, your average American socialist (masquerading as a democrat) will decry all of the above as an assault against the working man and favoring the wealthy. Anytime we do something to help business, the leeches start demanding their share, even though the leeches have done nothing to deserve it. That's our conundrum.

I anticipate a rebalancing of the scene. This won’t be Smoot-Hawley redux, with no tax cuts to put the carrot and stick on the opposite sides of the border from where they had been.

The US taxpayer saved GM. Is it expecting too much that they make their cars for the US market in the US?

Do the regulatory, tax, and labor law reforms FIRST.

Would anyone on this forum tolerate 0bama trying to dictate terms to American manufacturers?

Get rid of unions...

Good luck with that when dealing with GM. They are owned by the unions.

If anybody recalls (or cares), Obama stole the company from the bondholders and gave it to the UAW.

The entire company can go bankrupt as far as I am concerned.

They can already get away from unions. All they have to do it build the plants in right to work states.
Trump has it about right, they move those plants to mexico to take advantage of what amounts to slave labor. Then, they think they should be able to run those products into this country without paying any taxes at all.

Trump has said all along...he hasnt any problem with state competition.
