Study: Stand Your Ground led to increase in homicide cases

New medical findings link Florida's Stand Your Ground law to a significant increase in gun deaths.

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association states implementing Stand Your Ground in Florida is associated with a 24.4 percent increase in homicide and a 31.6 percent increase in firearm-related homicide in the state.

"So the implication of these findings is that almost immediately after Stand Your Ground was enacted, rates of homicide and firearm homicide have gone up at a quite startling rate," said study author David K. Humphreys, Ph.D. "We don't yet know and from this analysis alone we cannot tell why that is."

Florida's Stand Your Ground law allows people to stand and fight, including fire a gun, if they feel threatened, without having to be attacked first.

Study authors suggest using the findings to make informed decisions on policies regarding gun violence.

UCF Political Science Professor Aubrey Jewett said whether lawmakers will act on the study remains to be seen. The issue is as much an emotional one as it is a logical empirical one.

“It doesn't necessarily mean that policy makers are going to listen to those studies anyway," Jewett said. "In many instances the policy makers have their minds pretty much already set."

To read the study, head to the Journal of the American Medical Association website.

Another JAMA report published this week finds gun violence research is underfunded and understudied compared to other leading causes of death in America.

AMA are anti-gun shills. This "study" is all over the place.

The big question - how many of those ‘increased’ homicides were rules as justified under SYG?

Homicide is not the same thing as murder. As the post above notes, a justified shooting in self-defense is not murder, but can be classified as a homicide.

All deaths are homicides. They’re playing with words.
The dead perps won’t be a problem anymore.

The direction of this significant increase in gun deaths is conspicuously absent from the article.

I live in Florida and am willing to go out on a limb and say the increase is due chiefly to perps getting plugged by their intended targets.

And, being the racist, sexist, bigoted, homophobic deplorable that I am, I’m not gonna shed any tears over this.

The study did not account of the potential murders prevented by those acting in self defense and standing their ground.

Remember, Trayvon was killed in the act of attempted murder

"from this analysis alone we cannot tell why that is"

In other words, the conclusion is bogus. You have to eliminate all the unknown variables to validate a conclusion.

Anybody ever heard of JUSTIFIABLE HOMICIDE over there?

These libtard twits would be happier if all of these were just rapes or assaults (criminal winning) instead.

Can’t tell without looking at the article, but spot checking in found a monthly gun homicide rate of 0.283 in 2010 for Florida, essentially the same as the prep stand your ground average of 0.29 they report.

Reading the intro of the study, I think they found a period where there was a downward trend and assumed that this trend should continue, but it flattened out instead. Again, difficult to say without the full study, and I’m not signing up.

Also these are friends statistics. Wasn’t there a change in how the faith reported homicides, or was that just the “mass shootings” statistics ?

Maybe the increase was necessary...it will be interesting to see the data over five to ten years as bad guys figure out they risk their own lives when they prey upon the innocent public.

The “study” is typical of the bogus medical gun studies.

They could have used data from all 50 states and U.S. territories. There have been several states that have put “stand your ground” laws in place, several that had them or equivialents and several that did not.

John Lott looks at data down to the County level for all the states.

Instead, they cherry picked Florida and a couple of other states that fit what they wanted to say.

It is the old saw “Torture the data enough, and you can get it to say anything.”

Ah yes, all those yutes who waz just gettin' they lives turned around, with a promisin' rap star career.

And as one grieving momma said about her feral yute, gunned down during a robbery, "How else he gonna get money for school?"

“Remember, Trayvon was killed in the act of attempted murder”

True, but the “white Hispanic” did not use Stand Your Ground as a defense, despite the claims of the media and the anti-gun crowd.

I wonder if robberies decreased. Attempted robbery maybe about the same but successful robberies declined maybe?

Thanks, was going to make the same points. Gun deaths are up across the board in the US, in places that did not enact SYG laws. Most pointedly, COP KILLINGS.

Sounds to me like the law is working as intended and is confirmed by this study. Obviously one has to dig into the details to see if the increase in homicides were in fact justifiable under the law.

Not an FLA resident but if they weren’t the lib media would be up in arms.

I didn’t realize they had stand your ground in Chicago ( sarc )

PROPAGANDA! Just like the legal pain med PROPAGANDA. I pick our meds up from the Military base as it is DOD MANDATED for daily meds. Sign up says Military docs have doubled Pain Meds from 2014 to 2015, DUH WE HAVE BEEN AT WAR for nearly 9 years now with lots of blown off limbs, and internal injuries, of course there is an increase in pain med use. Some of it will be for life. But we are treated like street junkies now. Even Cancer patients.

NO one has tacked the suicides from with holding those pain meds.

TN has open carry, and we’ve seen NO increase in suicides except by illegal street drug OD. We have seen an increase in self defense from thugs. Just had a friend of my step daughter’s brother clerk, shot the other day in a store robbery, thankfully it was just a leg wound. Store has a NO GUN policy. Didn’t stop the gun toting thugs. But did the poor hapless clerk. We have seen record HOMICIDES BECAUSE OF LIBERAL POLICIES BY DEMO”RAT” CONTROLLED LEO, AND CITY LEADERS OF MEMPHIS, TN.
