Japan to recall envoy to South Korea amid row over ‘comfort women’ statue

JAPAN is recalling its ambassador to South Korea over a statue commemorating Korean “comfort women” forced to work in Japanese wartime military brothels during World War Two, the government said on Friday.

The term “comfort women” is a euphemism used for the girls and women who were subjected to the practice. South Korean activists estimate that there may have been as many as 200,000 Korean victims.

Chief cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga said the statue in the southern city of Busan was “extremely regrettable” and stated that Japan has asked for its removal.

So sad; those women went through hell. We can't forget history. The BBC article has a full Q and A over this story and history for those interested.

Seems like an over-reaction to one statue.

In other words, it represents something bad that really happened, but we would prefer not to be reminded of it.

Japan has never been forced to face what they did during World War II.
The forced prostitution of Korean women, as horrible as it was, pales in comparison to what went on in Manchuria with Unit 731.

The statue isn't regrettable. The fact that the Japanese forced hundreds of thousands of women into forced sex slavery is what is regrettable.

Anybody else think about how lucky the world is that Asian nations have such hatred and mistrust of each other going back to ancient times. Can you imagine what things would be like if all Asian nations got together for the same purpose? They would be hard to stop.

The Japs raped, tortured, murdered, and committed genocide throughput the Pacific Rim. They perpetrated war crimes and atrocities for which they have not apologized to this day. Eff a bunch of Nips, and good on the Koreans.

Japan still hasn’t apologized for the atrocities committed by their military in WW2.

None of this can come close to the islam abuse of women.

Kill islam and then we’ll drill down to the minutia.

Why S.K. waits 7 decades to do this?

Sounds like what democrats have been talking up Russian hacking, which has been going on since USSR stole American nuclear secrets using the Rosenburgs. But now that the polls queen has lost election, democrats are tied up in knots suddenly about Russian hacking.

As for brutality by victors in wars, that has been the rule since humans invented spears and arrows. What the Germans did to Jews in WWII was a million times worse than what the Japs did to Koreans in WWII. I can’t think of any wars prior to the WWII which was civil, PC, and humane.

Just finished reading “Killing The Rising Sun”. Horrifying history. Almost the same as ISIS, if not worse.
God-awful, sickening brutality - this planet is a mess.

Yes, and what the Japanese did in Manchuria pales in comparison to the wholesale genocide, forced abortions, and sterilizations in Tibet and Inner Mongolia carried out by Han Chinese.

The Japanese are overreacting here.

You mean like live dissections and switching people’s arms and leaving them in the cold to see the effects?

Yeah, that’s past insanity.

The devil himself would have a hard time coming up with such tortures.
