The death of the journalist Nat Hentoff, who slipped away Saturday at 91, takes one of Americas greatest tribunes of the Constitution at one of its hours of maximum peril. Hentoff rose to fame as a jazz critic of for the Village Voice. We tend to think it was no coincidence that his love of jazz, which toppled musical conventions, throbbed in the same heart that led him to challenge so many political conventions, particularly, though not exclusively, the political correctness of the Left. How we will need newspapermen like Hentoff in the years ahead...

Journalism was once a noble profession. Now we mostly have charlatans pushing Fake News. Jokers like Dan Rather, Brian Williams, Megyn Kelly, and Chris Matthews.
RIP Nat Hentoff — he did the job he was supposed to do. Not like these others.
A mensch. Whether you agreed with him or not, he was honest and honorable.
A big sigh and sad goodbye for a man I really loved.
As I said elsewhere...We shared a lecture platform once or twice, and I corresponded with him briefly - this was decades ago. A wry wit, a penetrating and tenacious mind, eclectic musical tastes compounded of passion and personal loyalty. Many have thanked him for Bob Dylan; I thank him for Doc Watson.
He was alert to Christians who actually lived like they were familiar with the Gospels. He championed Catholics who were pro-life and had open contempt for those who were not.
He surely defended Christ, because he defended Right to Life of the unborn baby, the rejected Downs Syndrome child {the Bloomington Baby case), and the blameless, doomed, judge-murdered Terri Schiavo. And Jesus said, Whatsoever you do to the least of my brethren...
May God deal with him according to his mercy. He will not be without his reward.
Nat was a REAL Journalist. He also frequently visited Freerepublic.com.
I knew Nat and his wife Margot - excellent people, funny and loyal. Nat helped me when a friend of mine was “swatted” by a local SJW who was on the city council of a small town in NJ. He was outraged (no one did outrage better than Nat) and got me to NJ ACLU lawyers who tried to help - unsuccessfully as it turned out but that wasn’t anyone’s fault. He kept his name in the phone book so that anyone with a tip or a problem could get in touch.
I just hope Laura Ingraham remembers him because he put her on the road to her long career. I don’t remember her ever having him on her show, though...
How do you know?

Only online.
He was a fine person and true journalist. He pursued finding the facts, even if they didn’t fit the agenda of the rest of the Left. He was a friend to many and respected by all but the cheap propagandists.

I bought a copy at an Exxon just off the LIE one time in 2008, not knowing the Sun was on its last legs. :(
