On June 5th, 1968, New York Senator Robert Francis Kennedy was shot and killed by Sirhan Sirhan, an Arab terrorist angered by Kennedys support for an arms deal to Israel.
The assassination, which took place in the midst of the tumultuous 1968 Democratic primary season, came just two months after the murder of Martin Luther King Jr. and less than five years after the killing of Kennedys older brother, President John F. Kennedy.
Often lost in the larger story of RFKs assassination, however, is his pro-Israel legacy and the centrality of his pro-Israel views in Sirhans motive.
On Saturday, Robert Kennedys daughter, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, spoke with Israels Channel 1 about her fathers support for Israel, the special bond his assassination forged between her and the Jewish state, and her personal views on Israel.
In the interview, which was broadcast on Sunday, Townsend described Israel as "extraordinary", calling it an example to the world.

"As you may know, my father, Robert Kennedy, was here in 1948 as a journalist. He covered the war in 1948, Townsend explained.
He wrote about the courage of the Israelis and how they were determined to build a new country, and that they would build this country, and that they had seen such horror in Europe, and that they would build a country of courage, of democracy, of values, and that he realized when he saw the Israelis that the United States had a special relationship with this country and needed to make sure that that relationship stayed firm. And as you know in 1968 he was fighting for the 50 jets that would be given to the Israeli army and he was killed because of his support."

There was a time when Democrats believed in their name. Now they’re upside down, and claim to be for what they’re against and against what they’re for. They’re against racism except if it’s against a certain race. They don’t like capitalism except they’re utterly controlled by a few rich people. They’re against the death penalty except in the case of innocent babies. They’re for civil rights except in the case of Muslims who are just the opposite. They call evil good and good evil, put darkness for light and light for darkness, put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.
Interesting post.. Coverage of the 48 war, might be something to pass the time.
Thanks for this article and will read later. Filed under “Things they didn’t teach me in Publik Skool”
I remember that day. I was very upset by it, and never knew until this article, WHY he was killed. It felt like a repeat of the President’s assassination which was very traumatic to many of us, especially school children.
I know the Kennedys aren’t very popular here, but back in the day...it was a different time and atmosphere. What happened to John has had an impact on the nation to this day.
Some have said—and I lean in favor— that if the Kennedys were alive today, they’d be Republicans.
JFK and Bobby were both staunch anti-Communists.
Bobby first came to prominence as an assistant to Joe McCarthy.
I thought it was Sam Giancana and Carlos Marcello who had Sirhan set up do this as payback for Kennedy going after the mob.
This explains why Sirhan was the perfect weapon to use to stop RFK. I tend to believe that RFK knew who killed his brother, and as president would be able to come after them.
I see jihadists in this light. They are glad to do the dirty work. They don’t always know who is pulling their strings, however. When there is a jihadist attack people don’t look past that to see who it benefits.
After they stuffed all those ballot boxes for his brother. The ingrate.
See tagline, and like you, I mean it way beyond the one issue.

Indeed. As a child growing up in America, the embrace of Israel was a given. In fact, I remember when the term “Palestine” referred to the region itself, and many Jewish People used it in the titles of their associations. Jewish People escaping Germany before WW2 said they were going to “Palestine”, and some of the partisan groups fighting the Nazis in Eastern Europe had names like “The Palestine Regiment” or whatever.
When Robert Kennedy was shot, and Sirhan gave his “reason”, I was stunned! We ALL supported Israel, and knew that the people of Arab descent were also much better off than they were under the Ottoman Empire. It was also the first time I heard of “Palestinians” being a separate group that HATED the Jews!
It was the opening salvo of the muslim jihad against America, in my humble opinion. YMMV.
