Putin has thrown in with Iran for some inexplicable reasons.

Military Sales or something like that. I've always assumed it was driven by some mutual trade advantage. Otherwise it makes no sense.

And anyone who can explain the Syria - Iran Love Affair is welcome to educate us all.

I can see Russia-Syria.

The to -the-core Islamic basis of Iran would seem to be totally antithetical to Putin's new found Eastern Orthodox interests plus a Yuge negative vs. the whole Chechnya-Russian history of late. It's got to be petroleum money based antagonism against Sunni SA.

Russia/Iran makes perfect sense. Iran causing trouble causes the USA to tie up 3 carrier fleets in the Persia Gulf area. One on station 2 either in port or in transit.

Remember Putin is not our friend even if it seems so compared to our own leftist at times.

Balance of power. Syria has been run by a Syrian Baathist fascist party since Hafez El Assad took over in the 1970s.

Saddam’s Iraq was also run by a rival Iraqi Baathist fascist party after Saddam took over in the 1970s.

The two were bitter rivals, hence “the enemy of my enemy” (Iran) is my friend.

To counter Sunni Islam. That is the big Syria Iran connection. As far as Russia and Iran its trade. Weapons, nuclear reactors and who knows what plus a dash of mutual self interests. With Russia supporting an autonomous Kurd portion of Syria I’m not sure how long they will be friends with Iran.
