Trump will be barred from speaking in Parliament

LONDON — House of Commons Speaker John Bercow has announced that he intends to block US President Donald Trump from addressing Parliament when Trump visits the UK later this year.

It is customary for visiting presidents to address MPs and members of the House of Lords in Westminster Hall when making state visits to Britain.

As speaker of the House of Commons, however, Bercow is one of three people who has the authority to block visiting figures from doing this.

The speaker said on Monday afternoon that addressing Parliament was an "earned honour" and not an invitation that came automatically with a state visit.

He said:

"What I will say is this. An address by a foreign leader to both Houses of Parliament is not an automatic right. It is an earned honour. Moreover, there are many precedents for state visits to take place to our country which do not include an address to both Houses of Parliament. That's the first point.

"In relation to Westminster Hall, there are three key holders to Westminster Hall: the speaker of the House of Commons, the speaker of the House of Lords and the lord great chamberlain. Ordinarily we are able to work by consensus and the hall would be used for a purpose such as an address or another purpose by agreement of the three key holders.

"I must say to the honourable gentleman, to all who signed his early day motion and to others with strong views about this matter on either side of the argument, that before the imposition of the migrant ban I would myself have been strongly opposed to an address by President Trump in Westminster Hall. After the imposition of the migrant ban by President Trump I am even more strongly opposed to an address...

Trump will be barred from speaking in Parliament

I seem to remember that sometime during the campaign that he would be barred from the United Kingdom, so I guess he's making progress.

You know these clowns in Parliament seem mighty uppity for a country that is quickly sliding into third world status. But they might want/NEED something from us sometime in the future. Lucky for them, from what I've observed, Trump is extremely forgiving though - WHEN IT MEETS HIS PURPOSES.

Watch the Parliament turn away from him...

I follow Paul Watson on twitter and that is where I learn what the air is like in the U.K.

This Bercow will be completely shut out...

This guy is a first class loser, probably suffering from a history of low-self esteem since childhood. These people are outing themselves as stupid.

I am sure DJT doesn’t care very much, really, whether he speaks at Parliament or not.
It is mostly a ceremonial thing to help bond the UK/USA special relationship (something UK should want even more now that they’re getting out from under the EU dicatorship)

I gotta say, tho, that this parilamentarian is definitely OFF his rocker......because HE is supposed to Go On Protocol in HIS position, just as DJT is supposed to in his.
AND .... this parliamentarian wants to snub President Trump just after DJT has hosted and had a very nice meeting in the White HOuse with the British PM........ and just after DJT restored Winston Churchill’s statue to the White House after Obama’s 8 years of trashing UK

“nice way” NOT! to say Thank You to President Trump

too bad in this case. He must be a pro socialist EU buffoon.

we have to remember the eu countries individually do not even reach the top half of our individual state GDPs.

We have 4 time zones on the continental USA. UK has one.

The monarch can, under certain circumstances, dissolve Parliament if I’m not mistaken. Rarely used, but the monarchy isn’t completely toothless.

Meet with the Queen and then go with Farage on all the Brit morning shows. Speak directly to the people. Screw Parliament.

Hmmm. And Brexit will require them to trade with us... Would be a pity of “most favored nation” status was revoked for this snub. Like him or not. Trump DID earn the honor to speak there by being elected POTUS.

I think not (at least not in a direct formal way).
But she could call in the parliamentary leader(s) for a “chat” ... yes....
AND
if she wishes, she can still invite DJT to visit HRH in her castle

The Beeb wants the revenue. The MPs want the exposure, and the queen likes Trump.

President Trump will address Parliament.

The popping sound you will hear are liberal Democrat Marxist progressive heads exploding.

Need to get Nigel Farage’s take on this fairy fest.

Personally, I know that there is a very large contingent of ultra-leftists in the UK media and Parliament that hate Americans and especially Donald Trump from even before he was President.

They are so arrogant and void of intellect, that to engage them in debate makes one feel like one’s brains have slipped into one’s bowels. They are not worth it.

Perhaps cancel the trip.

No.

Instead, show up and hold a rally. Thousands will attend. Parliament and the British MSM may not like Donald Trump but you can bet that there are countless Regular Joes out there trying to scrape by that would be thrilled to hear him speak.

And keep the Churchill bust.

The Monarch is far from toothless (many times here on FR I have explained the reserve powers and when they can be used) but this is one very specific case where the Monarch could not intervene. The Affair of the Five Members is a major event in British history that more or less relates specifically to the idea of a Monarch trying and failing to overrule the Speaker on a matter of the privileges of the House of Commons.

May it please your Majesty, I have neither eyes to see nor tongue to speak in this place but as the House is pleased to direct me, whose servant I am here. Speaker Lenthall in the House of Commons to King Charles I on 4th January 1642.

Each year at the State Opening of Parliament, the door of the House of Commons is slammed in the face of the Queen's messenger in symbol of this.
