My son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS and had trouble learning to speak.
He went to an OT and we were taught some sign language so he could start to communicate with us and that helped. We had to keep an eye on his teachers and assistants and pull him out of classes that were causing trouble. We were totally involved with his education and would not accept their excuses.
As he went through school, he was sent to special classes and eventually we got some medication and he was able to focus and become a better student.
He eventually decided to take himself off the medication as he was able to develop skills to accommodate his abilities. He is very smart and adaptable even as he still has issues with fine motor skills.
Over the years, he got OT and IEP’s in which he exceeded all expectations. Going into Boy Scouts and JROTC he became a leader and gained respect of his peers.
When he graduated, his grades got him a scholarship and he earned his Eagle in 2015. He brought his special needs worker to represent all the workers and gave him a mentor pin as a thank you for helping him.
Today he is going to school to become an engineer. He is a success and will continue to be because of people like your wife. He still has some difficulties but in my speech at his Eagle Court of Honor, he is an overcomer because of his persistence.
Thank your wife for his sake as he is a success story because of people like her.
Hats off to your son. Eagle Scout (I was a Star) is one heck of an achievement, great for him!
And I will pass on the very kind words to her.
