What is per se wrong with talking with a Russian official? Would it be any worse than talking with an American-hating EU politician? We are not at war with Russia. Most Americans don’t want to be at war with Russia. So as of now, any citizen is free to have, say, the Russian ambassador over for dinner to discuss international politics — as long as no state secrets are passed.
