After leaving The Washington Post in 1977, Carl Bernstein spent six months looking at the relationship of the CIA and the press during the Cold War years. His 25,000-word cover story, published in Rolling Stone on October 20, 1977, is reprinted below.

A coincidence?
Reality check: Bernstein wrote this piece during the Cold War, when America-haters were considered enemies; they weren’t inside the CIA nor in control of the media.
The CIA were pro-America and anti-Communist; whatever journalists the CIA used as spies, were used to that end.
Bernstein, at best, recognized that a precedent was being set which might eventually be flipped to ill purpose. At worst he may have held some sympathies for the Communists, and felt some antipathy toward fellow journalists for that reason.
I’ve never really gotten a handle on Berstein’s loyalties, but feel this article needs to be considered in historical context.
