It is for real. The Moon sits at the top of a deep gravity well. It takes very little energy to launch a payload from the Moon. But by the time that payload gets to Earth, it can pack enough kinetic energy to wipe out a city.

Destroy cities! What's the loss in that? If you take out Chicago, Illinois becomes a Republican state. If you take out New York City, New York becomes a Republican state. Etc.

Even so, it's far more likely that socialist governments would destroy cities than that capitalist corporations would.

Oh my God! We have already done this.

On February 5, 1971 Allan Sheppard hit two golf balls on the lunar surface.

On February 9, 1971 a 6.5 magnitude earthquake hit the San Fernando valley.

Coincidence? I think not!
