Father of 5, who converted to Islam while in the IDF, stopped at airport en route to Turkey with $1,000

A Belarusian-Israeli man was arrested as he attempted to join the Islamic State terrorist group in Syria, after expressing support for the group over the past year and a half, according to an indictment filed against him on Wednesday.

The suspect, Valentin Vladmir Mazlevski, was arrested in a joint operation by police and the Shin Bet security service earlier this month, though details of the case were kept under a court-issued gag order until the charges were filed.

As he was brought into the courtroom, Mazlevski told reporters in poor, heavily accented Arabic that “God will vindicate me.”

According to the indictment, he purchased a one-way ticket to Turkey in January, with the goal of crossing the border into Syria and joining the terrorist group.

Belarus was part of the Soviet Union.

Belarus, a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, is known for its Stalinist architecture, grand fortifications and primeval forests. In the modern capital, Minsk, the monumental KGB Headquarters loom over Independence Square, while the Museum of the Great Patriotic War commemorates the country’s role in WWII. The capital is also home to many churches, including the neo-Romanesque Church of Saints Simon and Helena.

Official languages: Belarusian, Russian

While it’s not unusual for a Jew, even an Israeli, to be dysfunctional (to say the least), it’s also true that among the Soviet Jewish refugees were many non-Jews, even fascist and neo-nazi non-Jews just looking to get out of the socialist paradise. It may emerge that this guy is one or the offspring of neo-nazis.

Belorussians are basically Russians - but Europeans call them “white Russians”.

I know there’s muzzies in Russia but not sure where.

That would be in Chechnya, where you see the red northeast of Turkey. Belarus is on the northern border of Ukraine.

he attempted to join the Islamic State terrorist group in Syria, after expressing support for the group over the past year and a half

They've been watching him for a year and half hoping he would lead them to bigger fish.
