My grandpa, a veteran of WW I, wanted to join the seabees in WW II. However, at 44, even he was too old.

However, he was the Construction Superintendent on the Seventh Lock of the Panama Canal during that time.

Interesting, my grandfather joined in 1943 at 43 years old. Maybe that was the cut off. He was still in when my dad got drafted in 45, he went to Germany but missed the fighting.
