This picture from NASA's Earth Observatory shows how much land in California's Central Valley is sinking, due primarily to the drawing of groundwater during periods of drought.
Heavy rains have fallen on many parts of the state this winter, but the image above is a reminder of the lingering effects of drought, even in wetter times.
As the legend at the bottom of the picture suggests, the yellowest areas are those with the greatest degree of subsidence (the term for sinking land) and the bluest areas are those with the least.

Likely compounded by the increase in obesity over the years. ;-)

"The rates of San Joaquin Valley subsidence documented since 2014 by NASA are troubling and unsustainable," DWR Director William Croyle is quoted saying in a recent post from NASA Earth Observatory. "Subsidence has long plagued certain regions of California. But the current rates jeopardize infrastructure serving millions of people. Groundwater pumping now puts at risk the very system that brings water to the San Joaquin Valley. The situation is untenable." And yet .... more and more people keep going to California, many of them immigrant, legal and illegal.
What part of UNSUSTAINABLE do the people of California not understand?

The sheer weight of the egos in Hollywood make me wonder why Cali hasn’t simply sunk below sea-level long ago

Global shrinking!
The whole world is sinking into itself towards the center making the planet smaller and smaller ... it’s a new theory I just cooked up. What do you think?

The image is amazing but it doesn’t show the depths of depravity. Or it would show Los Angeles reaching molten magma depths.
Gonna be 90 F today, so I believe it.

Good working theory. Need to purchase GACs to assuage guilt of one’s heavy physical matter. Global Atmospheric Credits. 1000 credits for every vote for globalist candidate or measure.

Remember Jerry Brown gave away our water rights in the 70s that were bringing water down.
We got nothing for it. It was a moonbeam move.

Parts of California are sinking because rich liberals need to water their lawns, fill their swimming pools every day, and stay green.

I like it...maybe you should call it The Global Raisin theory.

And the sheer numbers of immigrants
Yet Cali still blindly “welcomes” them, raises taxes and fees and spending, and just like the land, sinks further and further towards destruction

.
The real message is Corcoran, where the state of kalifornia has huge deep wells where they pump water to sell to irrigation districts.
NASA must have forgotten to mask out Corcoran.
