I knew a Vietnamese girl who was one of the ‘boat people’. She escaped at the age of 5, along with her father and 7 older sibs. When I met her, she was just entering a residency program in Radiology. Among her sibs were engineers, an orthopedist, a couple of research scientists and a pharmacist. All very successful.

I remember when SVN fell and all the refugees were coming over. I worked at a volunteer at one of the relocation camps in the Panhandle of FL.....met a lot of great folks who had escaped the Commies......

My parish is Vietnamese language. I have been a parishioner since the mid eighties when the parish was only a couple of years old. A huge percentage of the kids I knew then are doctors and pharmacists, rehab specialists and radiologists. The young ones now are staying out of medicine proper and going into the peripheral fields because they see no future in MD degrees and something like a rehab spec makes a lot of money and doesn’t have the headaches that MDs have, doesn’t have to pay out 800k a year for liability insurance, for instance.
