"remember that in the aftermath of WWII, it was keeping a substantial military force in Europe and Japan that a relative peace was maintained for many years."

Zactly, to McCain's credit he tried splaining this during his 2008 Presidential run and NoBama was having none of it. Well, we see where his plan ended. After WWII, all of the Germans and Japanese didn't suddenly become lovers of western style liberal democracy. It took many years to drain the fascist strains out of these two countries. The best way we can counter Iranian influence in Iraq and start them onto something like a functioning responsible country is to have troops there, have a stake in it. When Obama cut us loose, they looked for a new benefactor, the Iranians.

Some might say they don't care what happens in Iraq or Iran. Well, if we don't calm the Gulf States fears in the region, we could easily have a nuclear arms race develop to counter Iran.

No, the context was Muslim.
I didn’t overlook democrats...on the contrary, just like fake news, i assume if their lips are moving, then they are lying.

The inhabitants of the city where he was born, or at least the white, non-Jewish population of that city, has departed, except for Staten Island, southern Brooklyn, and a few areas elsewhere within the city limits, the “red” areas in the electoral map. The New York accent is dying out, with the speech of Trump and Bernie Sanders sounding anachronistic in 2017.

We have had a close and productive relationship with the Saudis for a long time beginning with FDR. It is in our national strategic interests to continue to do so.

If that’s your definition of pals then so be it. We could just as easily have the same strategic interest with Russia or Turkey but it doesn’t make us Pals. Now the Brits SoK Aussies they are pals.

Upon reading the headline and the excerpt, an image of Lilliputians tying Trump down like Gulliver’s Travels flashed through my mind.

Glad I read past the excerpt, it’s actually pretty positive.

Saudi Arabia has the world's largest reserves of exportable oil. The global economy runs on oil. Even if the US were to become energy independent, the global economy would still require Saudi oil.

Strategically, the Saudis occupy a key location in the region. The Saudis permit a sizeable US presence in their country and buy billions of dollars of US weapons. They are one of the few countries that we allowed to purchase an AWACS. The Saudis have been working with the Israelis to counter Iran, which is the country the Saudis fear the most.

The Saudis have been working with us below the radar on many issues. They are not our enemy. They are a strategic partner. We don't want the fall of the House of Saud and replicate what happened with the fall of the Shah. We are still dealing with the consequences of Carter's failed policies re Iran.

God help us if ISIS would ever get possession of Saudi oil and the revenue that comes with it.
