A volatile buildup of weapons and resentment along the northern Somali coast culminated in the hijack of an oil freighter this week, the first such seizure by Somali pirates since 2012, experts and locals told Reuters on Wednesday.
Gunmen hijacked the Aris 13, a small oil tanker, on Monday and are demanding a ransom to release the ship and its eight Sri Lankan crew, the EU Naval Force that patrols the waters off Somalia said.
Now shipping companies are scrambling to find out whether the attack is a one-off, or whether pirates could once again threaten one of the world's most important shipping lanes and cost the industry billions of dollars annually.
Somali forces have been sent to try to free the tanker.
But locals say the attacks will continue and blame their government in the semi-autonomous Puntland region for granting foreigners permits to fish in Somali waters.
"Since the fish are drained by foreigners, my colleagues plan to go into the ocean to hijack other ships. We have no government to speak on our behalf," said fisherman Mohamed Ismail.

“Maritime law should allow for defense of freight traversing the high seas.”
THIS is exactly the kind of thing the UN should be addressing with high priority. Every member nation should agree to some form of “ships in any port may have armaments aboard, so long as it stays aboard.”
Piracy isn’t new. It should be long obsolete, too risky a venture to bother with.
A-10 all boats along the Somali coast.
Well, this article does follow the liberal playbook. Why is their piracy? “Anger” at the Westerners who “steal” Somali resources and weapons. God Forbid someone blame it on the complete lack of control that the Somali government has over its territory.
Perhaps a “weapons as a service” should be started on the high seas. Once you’re outside legal range, a box of armaments is delivered; when heading for port, it’s retrieved. Gotta think entrepreneurial...
UN? What’s that? Oh, the soon to be defunded org in NYC.
+1
There’s also that “Letters of Marque” clause in the Constitution. Would very much like to see that restored to its intended use. (The Left would stroke out.)
In Oct 2013 there was a failed attempt to capture a tanker.
Maybe they had to take time off to build more dinghies.
I think I'd have to go with the russkie KPV 14.5 mm for shipboard use.
The round has twice the energy of the .50 and 15% more range. Two at the bow and a couple at the stern would provide adequate coverage.
That was the plot of Captain Phillip, the Left’s attempt to make Somali piracy all about fish skeletal ‘fishermen’ and not militant islam taking over the Horn of Africa.
Nothing is EVER the fault of muslims. It's always something else that angers them.
Biggest belly-laugh in months, thank you.
I actually have stitches.
“Barney Ross: What the hell’s he doing?
Lee Christmas: Hanging a pirate.
Barney Ross: Don’t be ridiculous. Gunner! What are you doing?
Gunnar Jensen: Hanging a pirate!
Toll Road: That’s seriously demented.
Yin Yang: This is no good.
Hale Caesar: Not that you’d feel it, but put one in Speed Racer’s shoulder.
Gunnar Jensen: Warning shot!
Barney Ross: No!
Gunnar Jensen: [Fires his M79 Grenade Launcher at the pirate and blows him in half] Little low.”
>> ... renewal of Somali piracy ...
This would be the same group of Somalis refugees who are settling in Minnesota and other states and who have no control of their morals, raping and murdering tendencies.
Mohamed always has an excuse for his crimes. They even made it a religion. According to his religion the proper response would be to destroy his village. How come in respecting the wishes of Islam liberals always require a Christian response? Where is "diversity" when you really need it?
yea not too hard, a few drones..
Just sink every sea-going boat in Somalia. Repeat every as needed.
