United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned on Thursday against an abrupt cut to U.S. funding for the world body, and France's U.N. envoy said a retreat by Washington from global affairs could lead to more instability.
"Abrupt funding cuts can force the adoption of ad hoc measures that will undermine the impact of longer-term reform efforts," said Guterres spokesman Stephane Dujarric.
"The Secretary-General fully subscribes to the necessity to effectively combat terrorism, but believes that it requires more than military spending," he said in response to Trump's proposal for an additional $54 billion in military spending.
French U.N. Ambassador Francois Delattre said a strong United Nations and a U.S. commitment to world affairs is needed "more than ever".
"America's retreat and unilateralism, or even the perception of it by other players, would create the risk of coming back to the old spheres of influence policy, and history teaches us that it has only led to more instability," Delattre said.
"In foreign policy, as in politics, perception matters," he said.

Oh please the whining is loud in this one.
The UN is a league of parasites.
Hey Tony G, you guys are IRRELEVANT! The UN is the joke of the world. You’ve outlived any usefulness you ever had.
Fine, can do it gradually over the course of a week.
Imagine the thousands of muckity mucks who may soon be forced to contribute something of positive value to humanity in order to earn lunch money
One that gets to go to lots of parties because we are paying for all the party favors.
The UN has 193 member nations and the US currently pays 25% of its yearly budget. That’s ridiculous. As others have said, nothing is stopping the UN from ‘fulfilling’ its ‘mission’. It’s just time for other nations to step up and stop mooching off of the US.
The UN once upon a time may have been a good institution but no more. It is nothing more than a corrupt cesspool.
It has veered too far to the Left and way outside the original boundaries and intentions.
I well remember a Bob Hope Movie from about 1964 called. “A Global Affair” about a child left at the UN and what country was going to claim it to raise. As a kid then I thought it a fun movie. A few years ago I saw it again and now see it for what is was Propaganda, using “It's all for the children”, to advance it's Leftist-Socialist Agenda. Anyone remember when you were in school being pressed into giving money to UNICEF?
So we need to pull out and let the UN collapse.
Karma can be a bitch, especially when you use the UN as a tool for a leftist agenda. Let Iran pay for it.
Do these folks get degrees in Gobbledygook?
Another foreigner “warning” and making “threats” to the U.S. Government. Nuke ‘em all.
All those third world bureaucrats will be out of a job and perks. Their kids will be out of the Ivy League schools and they will have to retreat to their various hell holes. Winning is such fun.
The Gravy Train is OVER Bucko !
The UN finally gets it
Obviously, the buffoons at the UN don't look out the window or buy a newspaper very often.
Since I grew up in New York City, and the UN was always viewed by us locals as party central and a pain for the rest of us, snarled traffic, skofflaws double parking not paying tickets.
I always read their claims that they were indispensible to world order and peace.
To me they spent most of their time partying and bashing Jews and Israel.
After all these years, they can’t point to one peacekeeping success. Even the Korean conflict was only made possible because Russia walked of the Security Council making the vote go thru without veto.
In the end Korea is more of a problem today than ever.
Lets not kid ourselves the UN is the biggest collection of Jew haters ever in one place and if bombed it would launch a celebration inside Israel and many places in our country.
Hey Mr. Guterres...go get your billions from the Germany, the wealthiest country on the continent...you know, the one that has been scamming us for billions of NATO dollars for the past 20 years!!
