The more things change, the more they remain the same. It seems a large part of modern history has been about repelling islam and a large part of islam has been about atrocities.

Worse imho. The city burned for days, thousands of people died trying to escape and the Turkish army engaged in horrible atrocities. All the while ships from several countries sat in the harbor and were ordered by their government to do nothing.
