South Africa Eyes Missile System Sale to Iran: Report

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – South Africa is seeking to sell surface-to-air missile system to the Islamic Republic of Iran, a report said.

According to the report carried by mybroadband website on Saturday, South Africa has applied to the United Nations Security Council to sell missiles worth R1.5 billion ($118 million) to Iran.

The report added that this will be the biggest deal yet for Denel’s Umkhonto surface-to-air missile system.

The Umkhonto vertical launch surface-to-air missile was developed for the South African’s Navy’s Meko A200 class frigates, and has been in service since 2001.

The missile is high-velocity and infrared homing, providing defense against attacks from missiles and aircraft. Although it is a surface-to-air missile, it is also capable of taking out stationary surface targets. The Umkhonto was designed with a 23kg warhead for high-kill probability, unlike other missile systems in its class.

This came after defense ministers from Iran and South Africa on December 13 signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the expansion of military and defensive cooperation.

The MoU entailed programs to ensure regional and international peace, stability and security, as well as efforts for decisive fight against terrorism. It also aims to promote mutual cooperation on maritime security, training courses, and exchange of experience in the battle against organized crimes.

South Africa has a very competent weapons industry, developed thanks to the Apartheid boycott.

Expat South African. US Citizen. Don’t poo poo their systems. This is not a good thing. The v shaped under armour they put under HumV’s was designed by SA. Their systems just work. Bubble gum and baleing wire.

Why do they not have many tank tread vehicles? They don’t need them.

Hell SA was a nuclear power. The test in the Atlantic off of Namibia. I think it was 76.

The Heinz family screwed them royally. Their tomato plants in Mozambique were dear to them. I don’t mean actual green plants. I mean processing plants. Deep state took over. RSA was screwed in so many ways. It has become a hellhole of corruption. It was the hope for sub Saharan Africa.

No more. It is a literal shithole today. Corruption at all levels like the rest of that God Forsaken continent.

That’s just rich, Iran fighting terrorism. Those missiles are headed for Hezbollah.

I am dismayed and shocked at the depth of the u.s. Betrayal of South Africa.

It could easily have continued to be the jewel that it was, but no.

and I hear the reports of how it is now and I’m so sad.

it’s such a huge waste and it could happen here.

SA was a very advanced country with extremely competent machinists. Then apartheid ended and the govt was taken over by incompetent crooks and it’s been a failing state ever since.
