Agreed, I’ve never heard a word about this.
Evidently some Catholics did participate in this, there was some local pent up anger, and it overflowed.
The former Pope didn’t agree with Catholicism taking ownership of the deeds.
If local clergy and parishioners go rogue, it’s not the fault of the Catholic Church (collectively) that doesn’t sanction anything like this.
A general statement of sympathy could be in order, but recognizing you can’t control every member of your organization.
People go rogue sometimes.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the church does relief and charitable works there. The locals probably understand the dynamics of the situation.
