The majority of the Church's so-called "wealth" is tied up in real estate and in art work. These assets are "public wealth." They are open for all to visit and see, much like a public museum. The Vatican couldn't even afford to have the Sistine Chapel artwork refurbished. A Japanese company footed the bill for that.
