Does Neil Gorsuch's Liberal Church Matter?
Samuel Smith ^ | 2/10/17 | The Christian Post

Posted on 03/26/2017 6:20:46 PM PDT by johnk

However, multiple reports have pointed out that Gorsuch and his wife attend St. John's, Boulder — a liberal Episcopal church headed by a very liberal, pro-LGBT female rector named Rev. Susan Springer.

Opposition to Gorsuch's affiliation with St. John's was voiced even before he was nominated.

Christian conservative activist and lawyer Andy Schlafly, the son of the late pro-life leader Phyllis Schlafly, voiced his concern over the possible nomination of Gorsuch in an email sent in November with the subject line: "veto these Sup. Ct. nominee candidates."

Schlafly wrote that Gorsuch "probably would NOT be pro-life on the Supreme Court" and included him on his list of "unacceptable nominees."

"Gorsuch's Episcopalian church has declared its 'unequivocal opposition' to pro-life laws and he has said nothing publicly pro-life," Schlafly wrote in the email.

Others, including journalist Julia Duin, who previously wrote for the conservative news outlet The Washington Times, have brought up the issue of Gorsuch's membership at St. John's.

"Think about that for a moment. If this man is the frightening conservative that some on the Left are already alleging him to be, there's no way he'd be Episcopalian, much less at a woman-priested church," Duin wrote. "The Episcopal Church, for anyone who's not been following religion trends in recent decades, has been careening to the theological and cultural left for years and its membership statistics show it. Thousands have left TEC and joined alternative Anglican churches."

"A Google search shows there's an Anglican church in Boulder that the Gorsuch family could be attending if they so desired," she continued. "So, the fact that the judge and his family has remained at St. John's says something."

people claim he is the next Scalia- yet Scalia was not shy and didn’t bow to political correctness when it came to the issue of gay marriag-e

This is one of those FR threads that makes me think FR needs some sort of timer button to ping people back to the thread in a few years. Remember the Palin running/not running threads? Same sort of thing here.

It matters. This guy could be a disaster. I would honestly pick Mark Levin As a SCOTUS. I don’t like him but I don’t doubt that he’ll interpret the Constitution in an unwavering manner. I’d also take Cruz for the same reason. These “judges” are too unpredictable. We know them for 2 months and for the most part their answers are, “I can’t answer that”. I don’t trust Senators to truly vet them either. Levin has been clear about his position for decades. He’s not changing. This guy’s Church is a red flag. Republicans shouldn’t just rubber stamp Heritage

Ahhh finally someone with some common sense. The only thing this thread doesn’t have is the children holding signs while the adults scream bloody murder and riot in the streets.

Oh wait only liberals do that, conservatives just sit at home on their computers and just talk the talk.

These people need to get a grip, they throw out all his judicial cases because of where he goes to church while they talk about how great Ted Cruz is even though during the primary he was proven to be a lying sneaky scumbag.

It’s just sad that in all the land our choices are so limited.

Seems that better options would be available.

From what I understand, there are better choices available.

Now is the time to discuss these matters not later, it will be to late.

It could very well mean his church attendance is shallow based on appearances, childhood ties, or friendships.

Now there you go throwing logic into this discussion! ;-)

His actual record is the best information available.

Unless they were actually deep cover ops.

Leftism is a religion.

And Episcopalians are a branch of it.

Neil Gorsuch is a huge risk.

Conservatives have too often fought for "strict constructionist" types who turned out to be huge disappointments on the bench. Liberals fight hard to place liberal activists on the SC who will advance their causes - conservatives fight to place people who will maintain the status quo and are often disappointed to find that they won't even do that. The only way to stop the seemingly relentless tide of left-wing judicial activism is by appointing strong, committed right-wing judicial activists - otherwise this is simply a losing effort.

Gorsuch makes me nervous.

It’s very concerning. I hope his nomination is stopped. He might turn out great, but we need a sure thing to take the place of Scalia.

Looking to degree of the Leftist opposition doesn’t really give you a good idea about Gorsuch at least at this point. The Left is often grossly misinformed. Truth is not something they fight to attain because they often invent it according to their feelings.

If his church is like that then he is very liberal. Either that or he is severely p#ssy wupped.

Well let’s see. He goes to a ultra-liberal church and disapproves of the way Trump talks about the judiciary. This guy is no Scalia and probably isn’t even as conservative as Kennedy.

>> Gorsuch is liberal.

But is he a Progressive? There is a huge difference these days.

The silliness of my fellow Christians at times is just jaw dropping. I grew up in my faith in the religious right. I spent time at L’Abri in the midst of the Christian surge into politics (over abortion, mostly). I have seen it morph into something which is shallow, uncritical, focused on peccadilloes, unaware, ghettoized, reactionary and frankly more harm than good at times.

Gorsuch may turn out to be a disappointment. There is NO hint of such in his rulings though. Nor is like Roberts, who was a “stealth” candidate, who we were asked to support because of the impeccable trustworthiness of GW Bush. He may bend left.

I prefer to go with a man’s declared principles, rather than try to read chicken entrails about his “spiritual” condition from the apostate church he attends.

Then why stay in the church?
Maybe you believe Obama ignored Wright.
