What about his wife? Was there some rule in The Book of Common Prayer that required him to convert to his wife's liberal religion in order to marry her?

No, but in my observations most do. I wonder if his wife was always Episcopalian? What was her background?

When I attended confirmation classes with my husband, the class was pretty much people in two situations. A spouse or fiancée converting so the couple and future children would all share the same faith OR the couple was made up of a Catholic and a Protestant of some persuasion and they had determined that being Episcopalian was sort of middle ground and therefore acceptable to both.
