Dollar coin is not bad. Canada already went that way, and they’re not suffering from NWO electronic-currency fever, as far as I know. Just replace Sacajawea and the other personalities that have thronged the dollar coin over the years with George Washington.

Like that will ever happen. Washington is part of a privileged class and must give way to those with higher skin melanin levels even if much less accomplished.

Thanks for the clarifications, fellow FReepers. I knew that dollar coins would last longer, but as mentioned up thread, there are some disadvantages.

I have a boxful of the Vietnamese versions of the square hole coins. I include two each in cards to just married kids in my parish.

Yes, but it isn’t legal tender in most places.

I say do away with all coinage and ban the existance of the following two assemblages of letters from annuciation: obama and change.
Both past being worthless with the latter being doubly so ruined by association with the “FOrmer” (what a relief it is).
From now on the latter can be replaced with the word ‘modify’ and we’ll just continue with our previously designated monicker for the nother.

The problem with the Sacagawea/Jean Baptiste Charboneau dollar is that when it when it tones out it looks like a giant brown penny. And unless you have really good tactile sense it still feels like a quarter in your pocket.

If it looks like a giant brown penny, it doesn't look like a quarter. And I can easily feel the difference between the ridges of a quarter or the smooth edge of a dollar while the coins are still in my pocket. (But I do get strange looks because it appears as if I'm playing pocket pool...)

The flip side of dumping the $1 bill and increasing circulation of $1 coins is also circulating many more $2 bills.

Color and edge aren’t enough. They need to otherwise change the size and/or shape as well.

No, they don't. As has been custom between the two countries for a very long time, the US $1 coin shares the same diameter, but different weight, as the Canadian Loonie.

The arguments against the Susan B. were well founded. The arguments against the Sac are just stubbornness to change (pun intended.)

We should have been out of the paper dollar printing business at least a decade ago.

Since when does the US do something because Canada does it that way?

Yikes!

Actually it’s the other way around. The Canadians have traditionally copied U.S. coinage, because until the late 1960s the Canadian Dollar was pegged to the US Dollar. The 1987 Canadian Loonie copied the 1979 Susan B in size.

RIght—and I don’t expect that to change anytime soon.
